  1. Who are the previous winners?published at 09:04 British Summer Time 6 October 2023

Since its inception in 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to 110 individuals and 30 organisations.

Last year's award was shared between human rights activist Ales Bialiatski, the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties, which documents alleged war crimes, and Memorial, a rights group banned in Russia.

Other past winners have included Pakistani child educational activist Malala Yousafzai, and Abiy Ahmed, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia.

Some organisations have been given the award several times. The International Committee of the Red Cross has won it three times, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has won it twice.

The short answer is we don't know - the names of the more than 350 nominees are kept sealed - but that hasn't stopped the usual feverish speculation.

Women's rights campaigners, climate activists and international courts investigating war crimes are thought to be among those under consideration.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been tipped on betting sites, but Nobel watchers say it's unlikely the prize would go to the leader of a country at war.

The names of climate activists Victoria Tauli-Corpuz of the Philippines, Sweden's Greta Thunberg, Ecuador's Juan Carlos Jintiach and Uganda's Vanessa Nakate have also been making the rounds in Oslo.

Brazilian tribal leader Raoni Metuktire, who campaigns against deforestation and for Indigenous rights and the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres are also believed to be in with a shot.

Or could it go to an organisation?

The UN refugee agency, the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court have also been mentioned as possibilities.
