  1. 'One civilian death in Somali attack'published at 09:19

    The BBC Somali service has spoken to a second eyewitness in el-Ade who has corroborated what they were told earlier (See 08:55 entry), that the bodies of dead soldiers could be seen on the streets of the town.

    The witness added that an elder from the town has also been killed - the only civilian death being mentioned so far.

    • Al-Shabab attacked a military base in el-Ade after dawn prayers.
    • Kenya's military says it was a Somali army base near an African Union camp where their soldiers are stationed
    • Al-shabab spokesman Abdul Aziz Abu Mus’ab says their group killed 63 Kenyan troops. He added they have taken over a Kenyan base and weapons, and their fighters are in control of the Kenyan base. The group alleges it is pursuing some Kenyan troops who have run to the bushes
    • Residents of el-Ade told the BBC that al-Shabab have raised their flag and paraded bodies of killed soldiers on the streets
    • Fighting is still ongoing
    • The camp is located in el-Ade in southern Somalia, which is close to the Kenya and Ethiopia borders
    • Kenyan troops moved to the area in 2011 under an operation to safeguard the Kenyan border
    • There are about 4000 Kenyan troops serving under the Africa Union mission in Somalia - Amisom.

    The Somali Islamist group al-Shabab have been giving their version of events to the BBC, but their account has not been independently verified.

    “We staged a massive attack on the Kenyan base in el-Ade in Gedo region [about 580km (360 miles) west of Mogadishu] just after morning prayers. 

    "It was carried out by our special brigade, which deals with Kenya attacks. 

    "It started with a car bomb, then our fighters stormed the base. We took control of the base after one hour of fierce fighting, and we are still in full control no matter what the Somali government says. 

    "There is no more fighting. We counted 63 Kenyan bodies inside the base. 

    "There were 31 military vehicles inside the camp, we have confiscated 28 of them plus all the arms and ammunition in the stores.”

    Our colleague in Mogadishu has spoken to an eyewitness who saw the al-Shabab attack this morning:

    ‘‘We heard a loud explosion at about 5:30am (02:30GMT), followed by heavy gunfire. We then saw an al-Shabab fighter in the town. We also saw Kenyan soldiers who were fleeing from the camp. At the moment the camp is in the hands of al-Shabab. We can see military cars burning and dead soldiers all over the place. There are no civilian casualties but most people have fled the town’’

  5. Kenyan army confirms al-Shabab attackpublished at 08:50

    A statement from Kenya's ministry of defence briefly describes what happened this morning close to their base in southern Somalia.

    Kenya says that the attack on a Somalia army base started at 4am local time (01:00 GMT).

    It adds that the camp - which is near a base for Kenyan soldiers - was overrun.

    There are no details of casualties.

  7. Al-Shabab overruns military base in Somaliapublished at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2016

    Military officials in Somalia say there is heavy fighting at an African Union base in the south of the country after it was attacked by al-Shabab militants. 

    Some reports say many soldiers have been killed. 

    The Islamists say they have taken control of the camp near the Kenyan border and have seized weapons and military vehicles. 

    But Somali officials say the fighting is continuing. 

    They say the attack began with a suicide bomber driving a car into the gates of the camp. 

    Armed men than fought their way inside the base where they were engaged by AU soldiers.
