Cameroon's military has been battling to end attacks by militant Islamists

Leading human rights group Amnesty International says dozens of people accused of belonging to the Islamic militant group Boko Haram have died in horrific conditions at prisons in Cameroon.

In a report,  Amnesty said the suspects died of disease, malnutrition and in some cases had been tortured to death.

It added that Cameroon has detained more than 1,000 people accused of supporting Boko Haram.

But in many cases, Amnesty said, the suspects were arrested without any reasonable suspicion that they had committed a crime.

They are being held in what the organisation describes as "inhumane" conditions.

At one prison in the north, up to eight people are dying a month.

Amnesty said it had  also documented extrajudicial killings by the security forces and six cases where suspects were tortured to death.

The government in Cameroon has yet to respond to the allegations.

  4. Rwanda defies ICC over Sudanese leaderpublished at 11:49 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

    Emmanuel Igunza
    BBC Africa, Kigali

Rwanda has dismissed a request by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to arrest Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir if he attends the African Union Summit being held in the capital,Kigali, this weekend.

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said the request - made in a letter two days ago - was a "distraction".

Earlier this week, the Hague based court reported Djibouti and Uganda to the United Nations Security Council for failing to arrest President Bashir when he traveled to the countries.

South Africa's courts ruled that President Jacob Zuma's government breached its international obligations by ignoring an ICC request to arrest Mr Bashir when he attended an AU summit in Johannesburg last year.

AU leaders will once again discuss the thorny issue of their relationship with the ICC at the Kigali summit.

Many African leaders accuse the ICC of being racially biased by failing to arrest warrants for other world leaders accused of war crimes.

The ICC says it is trying to achieve justice for victims of conflict in Africa.

It wants to try Mr Bashir on charges of genocide and war crimes related to the conflict in Darfur.

    He denies the charges.
