The outgoing president of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, has said he has filed an injunction to prevent Adama Barrow from taking office on Thursday.

Mr Jammeh, who is contesting his defeat in last month's presidential election, also said that the date of 19 January for his mandate to come to an end is not carved in stone.

He wants the Supreme Court to hear his suit against the Election Commission before he considers leaving office. The court does not have enough judges to meet before May.

Regional leaders have been urging Mr Jammeh to respect the results of the vote, and invited Mr Barrow to address the Africa-France summit in Mali's capital, Bamako on Sunday.

Mr Barrow will now stay in Senegal until Thursday.
