The Nigerian government says it has almost defeated Boko Haram after chasing them out of their last stronghold in the Sambisa forest in Borno state.

The shutdown follows a call for a strike by the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium (CACSC).

They accused the government of attempting to restart school education without addressing grievances over the use of French.

The CACSC called for a total shutdown of schools, markets and businesses - but also called on residents not to march, demonstrate or enter into confrontations with the police.

Bamenda saw clashes between protesters and security forces in December and November as people demonstrated against the use of French in courts and schools. At least one person was reported to have died.

  5. Big power cut in Kenyapublished at 11:00 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2017

    Abdinoor Aden
    BBC Africa, Nairobi

Various parts of Kenya have suffered a power outage since Sunday evening following a technical hitch at one of the power supply stations.

A similar situation occurred last year in what the sole power supply company, Kenya Power, blamed on a monkey.

Areas affected by the blackout include the capital, Nairobi and the coastal and northern regions.

Kenya Power has since said it is addressing the problem. In a statement, the company said:

"A technical fault occurred at Ndenderu substation in Nairobi this morning cutting off supplies from Olkaria to the City, Coast & Mt. Kenya regions"

Kenya’s industrial town of Thika in the country’s central region, which hosts major firms including car manufacturer Volkswagen, has also been affected.

The power cut happened during an event attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday, causing alarm when the lights went out. Alternative lighting was found and the meeting continued.

Kenyans have taken to Twiiter to vent their frustration:

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has become the latest inspiration for the challenge trend on Twitter.

People have been using the hashtag #UhuruChallenge , externalto make fun of Mr Kenyatta's perceived penchant for launching projects and his communication team's use of flowery language to describe them.

Lawyers for the former president of Chad, Hissene Habre, are due to launch an appeal against his life sentence for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during his rule in the 1980s.

It is unclear if Mr Habre will be compelled to appear in person at the special court in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, which he does not recognise.

His conviction last May was seen as a landmark prosecution against the impunity claimed by many of Africa's oppressive leaders. It's estimated up to 40,000 people in Chad were killed during Hissein Habra's presidency, with thousands more raped or tortured.

The hearing is expected to last several days and a definitive judgement on his conviction due in April.
