It's night-time in Kenya now and while we wait for the announcement from the electoral commission the supporters of incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta continue to celebrate.

They believe Mr Kenyatta will be declared the winner.

The BBC's Abdinoor Aden took these shots outside the convention centre where the supporters of the president's Jubilee Party are gathering:

There have been several moments today when we've been expecting an announcement from Kenya's electoral commission and it hasn't come.

And now is another one of those moments.

We were promised an announcement at 19:30 local time (16:30 GMT), but there's no sign of it so far.

Just minutes from the latest announcement from Kenya's electoral commission on the presidential poll, the opposition says it will not be part of the process.

International observers had praised the conduct of the election, but leading Nasa opposition member James Orengo cast doubt on their credentials. He criticised former South Africa President Thabo Mbeki, for Ghanaian President John Mahama and former US Secretary of State John Kerry.

He also said that "going to court is not an alternative".

One of the leaders of Kenya's opposition Nasa alliance, Musalia Mudavadi, has said on Kenyan television that the alliance "will not be party" to the announcement the election commission is about to make.

He said Nasa's concerns had not been adequately addressed.

Another leading member, James Orengo, has called the process a "disaster" and described the commission as an arm of the executive.

Earlier in the week, Nasa called the election results that had been announced fraudulent.

Africa's fastest woman at the moment will have a continent gunning for her during the 200m final of the World Athletics Championships in London tonight.

But as Ivorian sprinter Marie Josée Ta Lou goes for gold, her own mother will not be watching the television.

''I have a problem. I am a mother who wants her daughter to win. It's too hard for me,'' her mother Catherine Kouai Lou Zinvo told the BBC on the phone from Ivory Coast's biggest city, Abidjan.

''Her brothers, sisters, the whole family will follow the race. But I am too emotional. Some people prefer not to watch when they support someone.''

Ta Lou won silver in the 100m last Sunday, missing out to Torie Bowie of the United States by 100th of a second. She dedicated that medal to her mother.

It's not only in Nakuru that supporters of Kenya's governing Jubilee Party are celebrating in anticipation of what they believe will be victory for their leader, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Nakuru is a stronghold for President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The electoral commission is due to make an announcement in 25 minutes, but it is not yet clear if that will be the final result.

Mr Kenyatta had a strong lead in the preliminary results.

In The Gambia, a commission in charge of investigating former President Yahya Jammeh’s finances has started its hearings.

The country’s ministry of justice believes tens of million dollars of public money were siphoned off from state funds by the former leader during his 22-year rule.

Three bankers and the director of the revenue service were questioned at the start of the public hearings.

These aim to shed light on two issues, the mining activities of one of Mr Jammeh’s companies, and the alleged disappearance of taxpayer’s money.

The commission of investigation was set up by the new government of President Adama Barrow in July.

Its five members will look into allegations of abuse of power, embezzlement of public funds, and possible violations of the constitution.

Earlier this year, $50m in assets, including 86 bank accounts and over 100 properties were seized from Mr Jammeh by the government.

The charity of the former ruler, the Jammeh Foundation for Peace, is also under scrutiny.

President Jammeh ruled The Gambia for 22 years until he lost the 2016 elections to Barrow. In January he fled the country and settled in Equatorial Guinea.

It's been announced at Kenya's election tallying centre that the chairman of the electoral commission, Wafula Chebukati, will be making an address at 19:30 local time (16:30 GMT).

No details were given about what it might be about.

The ex-wife of the Liberian former president and warlord Charles Taylor has appeared in court in London via video link.

Agnes Reeves Taylor has been charged with torture offences allegedly committed during the Liberian civil war, which began in 1989.

Mrs Taylor, who is an academic based in east London, had her bail application rejected.

Her former husband Charles Taylor is serving a 50-year prison sentence for war crimes.

Hundreds of thousands of Liberians were people were killed in the civil war.

Diplomats started arriving at the election tallying centre in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, more than six hours ago. At that time, there was the expectation that the announcement of the presidential election result was imminent.

It still hasn't happened, but ambassadors are still at the centre, and 20 minutes ago Kenya's Foreign Minister Amina Mohammed was seen briefing them in a huddle.

It is not clear if the announcement will be made today, and the electoral commission has up until Monday to publish the results.

Eastleigh, the Somali-dominated suburb of Kenya's capital, Nairobi, is usually bustling on a Friday, but today the main street is unusually quiet, reports the BBC's Ahmed Adan.

Ahmed says that as Kenya still waits for the presidential election result people are staying at home, worried that violence might break out.

South Sudan rebels have launched an offensive this morning to try and retake control of their main headquarters, Pagak, near the Ethiopian border, which was seized by the government on 6 August, reports say.

“We attacked the area in the morning and clashes are still ongoing. The government forces are withdrawing from Pagak,” the rebel deputy spokesman Lam Paul told Amsterdam-based radio Tamazuj website, external this afternoon.

Mr Lam said that heavy clashes rocked Pagak this morning as the rebels “launched a surprise assault on government forces in order to regain their main headquarters”.

The government has confirmed that their forces in Pagak came under attack early this morning but say they repulsed the attack.

“They returned back again and attacked us around 12:00 (09:00 GMT) but we repulsed them. We are now in Pagak town,” the government-appointed governor of Maiwut state Bol Ruach told Radio Tamazuj.

According to the official five rebel soldiers were killed and four government soldiers were wounded during the clashes.

In Egypt, at least 18 people have died and 55 people were injured when two trains collided in the city of Alexandria, state television is reporting.

The AFP news agency says that medics are at the scene according to pictures being broadcast.

In Kenya's Nakuru County, in the Rift Valley, voters elected Susan Kihika as senator with 89% of the vote - she is one of only three women declared to have won a seat in Kenya's upper house.

Earlier this year, Kenya's High Court ordered parliament to enact a law that will ensure women get at least a third of all elective seats.

Kenya's opposition coalition, Nasa, has demanded access to the electoral commission's servers, the Reuters news agency reports.

The opposition says it will accept the results found there, Reuters adds.

Chief executive of Kenya's electoral commission Ezra Chiloba has pleaded for patience as the commission continues to check the results of Tuesday's elections.

He said to applause: "It's [more] important to be accurate than to rush the process and make mistakes."

Dignitaries have been gathering at the election tallying centre, known as Bomas, over the last few hours in expectation of a result.

Supporters of the party of Kenya's incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta are gathering at the international conference centre in the capital, Nairobi.
