The government of the Central African Republic says a plane from an unidentified country has bombed a military camp in the town of Bossangoa.

There have been separate reports of fighting in the same area involving the rebel group, the Coalition of Patriots for Change.

The government statement said the plane had also dropped explosives on a base belonging to allies - a term often used to describe Russian mercenaries - before heading north.

It said there had been material damage but didn't mention casualties.

The attack hasn't been independently verified.

Hundreds of fighters from the private Russian security group, Wagner, have been helping CAR's military to fight rebels.

There is growing opposition in the country against genetically modified crops

A Kenyan court has temporarily suspended the government's decision to lift a ban on the importation and distribution of genetically modified (GM) crops and animal feeds, according to local media reports.

It follows a lawsuit lodged by a lobby group representing peasant farmers - the Kenyan Peasants League. The group argues that the lifting of the ban was "not procedural and unlawful".

The government last month reversed a 10-year ban on GM crops as the country faced a severe food shortage caused by four failed rainy seasons.

Lifting the ban meant that Kenyan farmers could openly cultivate GM crops, as well as import food and animal feeds produced through genetic modification, such as white GMO maize.

  11. Ethiopia hosts internet forum despite shutdownspublished at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    BBC Afaan Oromoo

Ethiopia is hosting the UN's annual internet forum despite an internet blackout of more than a year in the war-devastated region of Tigray.

More than 2,500 delegates from all over the world are attending the forum, which is focusing on ''connecting all people and safeguarding human rights''.

However, the UN's decision to host the event in Addis Ababa has raised eyebrows among internet and human rights campaigners.

It’s not uncommon for Ethiopia's authorities to shut down the internet in areas affected by conflict, making it difficult for families to keep in touch.

In the past, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed defended blackouts, saying "internet is not water, internet is not air'' and shutdowns were aimed at saving lives.

He added that decisions were made to save lives during conflicts.

    Ishaq Khalid
    BBC News, Abuja

Security forces in Nigeria have rescued nine hostages and 90 cattle during a raid on the forest hideouts of armed criminal gangs in the north-western state of Kaduna, officials have said.

Troops had clashed with the gangs during the operation in Chikun area, Kaduna state commissioner for internal security Samuel Aruwan said in a statement.

The armed kidnappers then fled, he added.

It was not immediately clear for how long the hostages had been in captivity.

Mr Aruwan tweeted a photo of some of the people freed:

  14. Turkey and Egypt may soon restore diplomatic tiespublished at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    BBC World Service

Turkey’s foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said his country and Egypt may soon restore full diplomatic relations after nine years of tensions.

He said negotiations could begin "in the coming months".

Ankara and Cairo severed ties in late 2013 soon after Egypt's President, Abdul Fattah al-Sisii, came to power in a coup.

Turkey was a strong supporter of the deposed leader, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Earlier this month Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan shook hands with his Egyptian counterpart at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar - signalling what his office described as a new start in bilateral relations.

Police found 25 bodies in one grave

Malawi’s former President Peter Mutharika has for the first time visited his stepson Tadikira Mafubza in prison in the capital, Lilongwe.

Mr Mafubza was arrested last Wednesday in connection with October’s discovery of a mass grave in the north of the country containing 30 bodies suspected to be Ethiopian immigrants. He has been charged with human trafficking and murder.

Mr Mafubza has not commented on the charges.

Mr Mutharika did not grant any interviews after the visit to the prison.

However in a statement released on 26 November he described the arrest as part of a political witch-hunt against his family and supporters of his Democratic Progressive Party.

Several members of his former administration, including ministers and his bodyguard, are also in prison facing corruption-related charges.

Mr Mutharika became president in 2014 and stepped down in 2020 after he lost an election to current President Lazarus Chakwera.

Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya confirmed to the BBC that Mr Mafubza's trial will take place in Mzuzu, nearer to the site of the alleged crime. But a date for the trial has not been set.

In October, police found 30 bodies, including 25 in one grave, in a forest in the northern district of Mzimba.

The bodies were exhumed and autopsies have been carried out but the authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of death.

  18. Protesters picket over racist rant in SA dog rowpublished at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2022

    Nomsa Maseko
    BBC Southern Africa correspondent

Protesters have picketed in South Africa against a white woman accused of a racist rant - including calling for black people, rather than pit bulls, to be killed and for the uteruses of black women to be removed - in a voice note posted on WhatsApp.

Belinda Magor's comments came amid a highly charged public debate over whether pit bulls should be banned following a recent spate of attacks on children.

Some people have called for the total ban of the breed as pets.

Ms Magor, 60, later blamed her outburst on her diabetes.

The voice note was shared in a WhatsApp group advocating for pit bulls.

She was arrested and released on warning at the weekend.

Police have said a case of crimen injuria - which refers to injuring a person's dignity - has been opened against her.

She is due to appear in court in March.

The picket took place outside what was believed to be the estate where she lived in Benoni, east of the main city Johannesburg.

Ms Magor has reportedly been evicted from her home by her landlord.

She was served with a 30-day eviction notice after he identity was revealed.

The picket was organised by the Azanian People's Organisation (Azapo).

Its deputy leader, Kekeletso Khena, said that Ms Magor "has no place in South Africa. She has lost her right to live amongst us."

The WHO said it had received complaints the current name was "racist and stigmatizing" and that, after consultations with experts, mpox would be used simultaneously with monkeypox for one year.

Thereafter, monkeypox would be phased out.

The WHO urged other medical organisations and the media to adopt the new name as well.
