The attack comes after some schools in the nearby city of Peshawar were closed by authorities amid reports of a planned attack. Peshawar, about 50km (30 miles) from Charsadda, was the scene of a 2014 Taliban massacre at a school.
The gunmen reportedly entered the university early on Wednesday morning. Police have surrounded the campus, and are evacuating staff and students.
Several gunmen have attacked the Bacha Khan university in Charsadda in northwest Pakistan, and have injured at least three people. Explosions have also been heard.
