In a move similar to that announced in Italy, UK taxpayer-owned bank RBS will allow people affected by the coronavirus outbreak to defer mortgage and loan repayments for up to three months.
The bank, which runs the RBS, NatWest, and Ulster Bank brands, also said savers could close fixed-term savings accounts early with no charge.
This is designed to allow people to access cash if they need it as the impact of the virus is felt.
British Airways passengers have complained of being stranded in Italy after the airline opted to cancel all flights in and out of the country until 4 April.
Jess Nicholls, 43, an enterprise change consultant, told the Press Association she felt "dumped" by the airline after it notified her by email that her flight from Rome to London would be cancelled.
She said she was seeking an "acknowledgement that they just stranded loads of passengers when they said they would get us home".
"Their website was down, their call centres are overloaded and we got an email after midnight saying our flight was cancelled. It's putting more passengers in danger."
Ms Nicholls said she "had to fight" to secure a place on Tuesday on a flight from BA-owned Vueling, which she was told was currently operating as planned.
Mortgage payments will be suspended across Italy as part of measures to soften the economic blow of coronavirus on households.
Laura Castelli, Italy's deputy economy minister, told Radio Anch'io: "Yes, that will be the case, for individuals and households."
Italy's banking lobby group ABI said lenders would offer debt holidays to small firms and families.
Suspending debt payments is not unheard of in Italy. Some small businesses and families were given time off , externalduring the financial crisis before having to repay.
More than 300 cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in the UK, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying the outbreak will present "significant challenges" to the country.

Earlier, British Airways announced it had cancelled all 60 flights to and from Italy today.
Now, BBC transport correspondent Tom Burridge reports, BA has gone further, cancelling all flights to and from the country until 4 April.

Jet2 flies to Naples, Pisa, Rome, Turin, Venice and Verona.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) says it is closely monitoring the impact the coronavirus outbreak could have on pharmaceutical supply chains in the EU.
As the public health emergency develops, the EMA has organised the first meeting of the EU Executive Steering Group on shortages of medicines caused by major events to address any potential future impact.
Officials will discuss ways to protect at-risk patients in the event that there is a temporary lockdown of medicine manufacturing sites in areas affected by Covid-19.
Currently, there are no reports of such shortages of medicines within the EU.
The EMA says it has already urged those within the industry to report any possible shortages to EU authorities.
It also indicated that any potential disruptions have not yet been identified, and that any impact in the short-term would be limited, given the current stocks in place.
About 3,000 people have been “quarantined” for the past two weeks on Pakistan’s border with Iran because of coronavirus fears.
Some have been protesting to complain that they are being held in unsanitary conditions.
These are mostly pilgrims who were quarantined as they returned on foot from Iran.
BBC Urdu’s Azam Khan spoke on phone to Amir Ali, who runs a transport company for pilgrims to Iran and Iraq.
