    • 15:20: Xi arrives in Bali

  3. Why are they meeting in Bali?published at 04:27 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2022

Xi and Biden are meeting in Bali because they are both due to attend the annual G20 summit there, which begins on Tuesday.

The G20, or Group of Twenty, is a club of countries which meets to discuss plans for the global economy.

This summit's main aim is to help economies recover after Coronavirus, but tensions over the Ukraine war could hamper discussions.

Between them, G20 countries account for 85% of the world's economic output and 75% of world trade, external. They contain two-thirds of the global population.

  4. Biden to say US does not seek conflictpublished at 04:14 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2022

Aboard Air Force One on Sunday, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters what to expect of the meeting with Xi Jinping.

Sullivan said Biden would make clear that “the United States is prepared for stiff competition with China but does not seek conflict, does not seek confrontation”.

Biden will say that “all countries, including the United States and the PRC, should operate according to a set of well-established, agreed rules, including on freedom of navigation, on a level playing field for economics, and on refraining from the use of intimidation or coercion or aggression”.

Biden will also show “a genuine willingness to work together in areas” where US and Chinese interests converge, such as climate change and public health.

“So, he'll have that opportunity to sit and be totally straightforward and direct and to hear President Xi be totally straightforward and direct in return,” so that both would have a better understanding on how to manage the relationship between the two countries, said Sullivan.

  5. Greater mistrust now than beforepublished at 04:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2022

Competition, not conflict with China – that’s what Biden hopes will be the theme of this meeting.

In that time relations between the two superpowers have deteriorated, over Taiwan, China’s reluctance to press Russia over Ukraine, and its growing military strength and assertiveness.

Biden says he hopes both leaders will gain a better understanding of each other’s greatest concerns from this meeting, and find a better way to manage their differences.

There are many areas where other countries attending this summit believe the US and China could and should co-operate more, in particular over climate change and reviving the post-pandemic global economy.

But there is a lot more mistrust of each side’s intentions than in the past, too much to be overcome in one meeting.

  6. Taiwan tops agenda for Xi and Bidenpublished at 03:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 November 2022

    Reporting from Bali

After numerous phone calls and virtual meetings, Joe Biden and Xi Jinping will once again get a chance to size each other up in person in Bali.

The meeting between the heads of the world’s biggest superpowers will be their first since Biden took office.

Xi has spent most of the pandemic in China and only recently began travelling overseas again.

They’re likely to talk about Taiwan - there have been fears of a military escalation over the self-ruled island which is claimed by Beijing.

In recent weeks, US officials have warned that China may escalate plans to invade Taiwan.

Biden has also said repeatedly the US would defend Taiwan if this happens, though officials have rowed back his statements.

But most experts believe that any conflict between the US and China is more likely to arise because of a miscalculation than because of China actually invading Taiwan.

Last Thursday both Biden and China signalled they hoped to avoid a conflict over the island.

Speaking to reporters, Biden said he wants both leaders to “lay out what each of our red lines are” and explain “critical national interests”.

This way they can “determine whether or not they conflict with one another… And if they do, how to resolve and how to work it out”.

Meanwhile, China’s foreign ministry has said the US should work together with China to avoid misunderstandings and misjudgements.

But it also said that while it wants peace with US, “the Taiwan question” is at the core of its interests.
