Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un had been taking a look around Russia’s most modern spaceport, Vostochny Cosmodrome.

It’s an excursion that’s taken in launch pads and space rockets.

Space is a subject of huge interest to North Korea’s leader. His country has tried twice (and failed twice) to launch a military spy satellite.

Asked by a Russian reporter whether Moscow would help Pyongyang launch a satellite, President Putin replied: “That’s why we’ve come here. North Korea’s leader is very interested in rocket technology…”

Basically, ammunition: Russia needs a lot of it in its war against Ukraine.

And North Korea, one of the most heavily militarised countries in the world, has plenty to spare.

The most likely weapons they'll offer Russia are bullets, shells, and even old missiles, Kim Dong-yup, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies, told the BBC.

The country has tens of millions of artillery shells and rockets, according to some estimates. Analysts believe there could be a healthy stockpile because the North has not fought a war since the Korean War ended in 1953.

Prof Kim said handing these older munitions to Russia will not dampen the North's defence capabilities - at a recent military parade, their army appeared to be armed with new weapons.

Pyongyang's firearms are also largely based on Soviet weapons systems. That makes North Korean munitions, to a large degree, compatible with Russia's arsenal.

  10. Kim has 'great interest' in rocket engineering - Putinpublished at 06:10 British Summer Time 13 September 2023

Putin says he is meeting Kim at the Vostochny Cosmodrome because the North Korean leader "shows great interest in rocket engineering".

That's certainly one way of describing North Korea's banned missile test launches and nuclear weapons development over the past years.

"They are also trying to develop their space programme," Putin was quoted by Russian news agencies saying.

  11. North Korea has seen two satellite launch failures this yearpublished at 05:52 British Summer Time 13 September 2023

North Korea has been keenly developing its satellite programme although both attempts to put a spy satellite into space this year ended in failure.

The first attempt in May saw the satellite crash into the sea shortly after taking off. The second attempt last month failed during the third stage of its flight.

Pyongyang's space agency has said it will try again in October.

Analysts say a spy satellite would be a coveted prize for Kim as it would let him monitor incoming attacks and plot his own more accurately.

North Korea has failed twice to place spy satellites into orbit, and it's been heavily speculated that it will ask Russia for help with its space programme.

  14. North Korea and Russia cooperate in 'sensitive areas' - Kremlinpublished at 05:38 British Summer Time 13 September 2023
