  2. We would have batted first - Rohit Sharmapublished at 08:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

The Indian captain looks unaffected after losing the toss.

He says his side would have batted first anyway. "It's a big occasion and we would like to put a big total on the board."

  6. Australia's selection decisionspublished at 07:58 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

    Matthew Henry
    BBC Sport in Ahmedabad

Australia's main selection decision is between batter Marnus Labuschagne and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.

If the pitch is slow, as India skipper Rohit Sharma predicted yesterday, then that would favour Labuschagne.

Stoinis has been wandering around with his baseball cap on backwards not looking like a man about to play a World Cup final.

  7. Here is the pitch report for youpublished at 07:56 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

Ravi Shastri: "It looks very dry, there is not much rolling. It looks patchy. I expect it to turn a bit. The pitch used in the India v Pakistan game had a bit of a sheen, this one looks dry. Batting first is premium. India's X-factor is just carrying on with what they have been doing."

Matthew Hayden: "Forget the pitch and the outfield. Make it count and put a big total on the board like how Australia did in the 2003 final against India. The game plan for Australia is to fight. Adam Zampa is Australia's X-factor. And Travis Head is the X-factor in the batting department."

  9. Why Amitabh Bachchan fans are asking him to not watch the matchpublished at 07:50 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan chats with Tommy Sandhu in front of a live audience for Asian Network's In Conversation at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London.

The big question is: will Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan watch the match or not? That's because the actor is known to be superstitious about watching India's matches.

"When I don't watch, we WIN!" the actor wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after India won the semi-final match against New Zealand.

Since then, Indian fans have been asking him to stay away from the final.

Back in 2011, his son, actor Abhishek Bachchan, had said his father believed the Indian team would lose a wicket if he watched their World Cup matches. So, the legendary actor would stay in his room, asking his family to update him about the score.

While he skipped the semi-final in 2011, reports say he did watch the final - which India won. So, maybe he should just watch it this time too.

Desperate ticket-seekers are thronging the gates of the stadium. Some fans, who have travelled hundreds of kilometres from states such as West Bengal and Kerala without tickets, told us they have been unsuccessful in procuring them.

Meanwhile, police say they are looking for anyone selling tickets illegally for a premium.

  12. Will Ashwin play?published at 07:39 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

There are whispers that India might pick Ravichandran Ashwin on a pitch that could offer turn.

That will be quite a story. We will know for sure at 13:30 (08:00 GMT) when the teams announce their playing XIs.

    Reporting from Mumbai

Until recently, Komal Kirad couldn’t understand why her family and country were crazy about cricket. She says she would get irritated when her father waxed eloquent about cricket players and matches.

“I only knew what a ‘four’ and ‘six’ were,” says the 23-year-old.

    Komal Kirad

That changed two years ago when she had to pick a physical activity as part of a course and ended up choosing cricket - she fell in love with the game and now plays for a Delhi-based academy. On Sunday, she'll be joining her father as he cheers for India and will be watching the team’s spin bowlers closely.

“I like studying their run up, how they grip the ball and set the field. I’ll get to learn a lot.” And one day, she hopes to follow in their footsteps and represent her country.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be at the stadium today, but his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese will be represented by his deputy, Richard Marles.

But Mr Albanese has been at the Narendra Modi stadium before - in March, the two prime ministers inaugurated a cricket match between their teams there, and the two leaders even took a "lap of honour" around the ground, waving to the crowd.

Yes, today's match is between India and Australia, but let's take a minute to remember one of the most heart-warming parts of the tournament.

Afghanistan entered the World Cup as underdogs and ended up winning hearts along the way - the plucky players defeated some mighty opponents and proved that they are a team to watch.

  16. A win will take fans over the Moonpublished at 07:27 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

If India win the Cup today, it will be the second time in less than three months that the country would have something big to celebrate.

On 23 August, after India’s Chandrayaan-3 became the first spacecraft to land near the lunar south pole, huge celebrations broke out across the country, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying "India is now on the Moon".

For the die-hard cricket fan, a World Cup win after a gap of 12 years will be no less joyous an occasion.

  17. We want to win it for Dravid - Rohit Sharmapublished at 07:22 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was all praise for his coach Rahul Dravid ahead of the match. Dravid had an illustrious career as an Indian batter, but a World Cup trophy remained painfully out of his grasp.

"Obviously, what he has done for Indian cricket is massive. He also feels that he wants to be part of this big occasion. It's for us to do it for him," Rohit said.

  18. All eyes on the TV…published at 07:21 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November 2023

Away from Ahmedabad, India’s bustling streets are likely to be much quieter than usual. Not just because it’s the weekend, but also because fans will be glued to their TV and phone screens.

The India-New Zealand semi-final where Kohli made his 50th ODI century broke concurrent viewership records for Disney+ Hotstar, which is streaming the matches.

And if India win, expect the streets to be flooded by jubilant fans, singing, dancing and waving the national flag.
