People are using social media to look for loved ones who have been missing since the attack in Nice. 

The local newspaper Nice-Matin has set up this Facebook page, external for that purpose, which some have used to post images of missing relatives.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says she is "shocked and saddened" by the "horrifying attack" in Nice and that the UK will stand "shoulder to shoulder" with France. 

She says the UK is working to find out whether any UK nationals were involved in the attack and that a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee has been scheduled. 

If it is confirmed as being a terrorist attack, she says efforts must be redoubled to stand up to these "brutal murderers", adding: "We must stand up for our values and our freedom." 

Mrs May says the threat level in the UK is already at severe - meaning a terrorist attack is highly likely - but that officials will be reviewing what more can be done. 

She says more funding is being made available to the security services and police for counter-terrorism policing.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has made a released a statement saying: 

"The thoughts and prayers of Kenyans go out to all the victims of last night's attacks in Nice, to their loved ones, and to France. May they find the strength to bear this loss.

"These attacks appear to have been motivated by the same evil ideology that has inspired equally vile attacks in Kenya. As a friend and ally of France, and as a nation that has suffered the same evil that was visited on France yesterday, Kenya stands ready to support France in this time of sorrow and grief.

"Together, we will do everything we can to defend the cause of democracy, and to defeat the terrorism that brings nothing but hatred and division between peoples."  

Kenya has been hit by large-scale terrorist attacks in recent years, including the 2015 attack on Garissa University in the north-east of the country which killed 148 people and the Westgate shopping centre siege which killed at least 67 in 2013.

A man from Toronto, Canada, who was on a three-week holiday in Nice before starting law school, has spoken about witnessing the attack.

Pouya told the BBC: "I heard lots of screams and everybody was running in different directions. I didn't know what was going on, it felt surreal and I didn't move but thought it must be some kind of practical joke. 

"Then I saw the truck coming straight at me, swerving all over the place. It was perhaps 50 yards away. After that there was no conscious thought, my body took over, time slowed down and I ran and thank God I got out of the way.

"I jumped into a doorway and a very nice Frenchman let me and about 15 other people into his apartment. We stayed in there for a while and then when it was safe we left. There were lots of panicked people, dead bodies were in the street and there were police everywhere. I didn't want to look at the dead bodies.

"At first I felt OK and thought I should be more terrified, but when the night calmed down I realised I was actually really shaken up and the images just keep going around in my head. 

"I booked a flight out of Nice straight away as I just need to move on now."

French senator Nathalie Goulet says the attacks are a "nightmare" and happened despite Nice being a very secure city. 

Ms Goulet, who is chairwoman of the Senate foreign affairs and security committee, said: "The question is: are we able to prevent it. And my answer would be, unfortunately no."

The focus had to be on intelligence because "we cannot put a policeman behind everybody".

We are getting further details of some of the nationalities of the victims of the attack in Nice. 

One Russian woman has been killed and another one injured, the Russian Tourist Industry Union reported. 

The news was later confirmed by the Russian Foreign Ministry, which added that three more Russian nationals remained unaccounted for. 

Earlier, French officials called on people across the country to donate blood to help the victims of the Nice attack. 

They now say that they have enough blood, thanks to the response of the public.

US broadcaster NBC is reporting that a father and son from Texas were among those killed in the attack in Nice. 

The news that baseball coach Sean Clark and his 11-year-old son, Brodie, had been killed was given to the broadcaster by a "family representative", NBC said.

Belgium’s alert level will not be raised following the attack in Nice and will remain at three, Prime Minister Charles Michel has said. 

The government had already taken extra measures ahead of the Belgian national day on 21 July. 

With the events in Nice, those measures will be reviewed.

Local media are reporting that the driver of the truck was a local man called Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel

His apartment was searched this morning, in Nice, the reports say.

There is to be a Cobra meeting following the Nice attack, the BBC's political correspondent Chris Mason has tweeted. 

Meetings of Cobra, which stands for Cabinet Office Briefing Room A, are held in the UK in response to crises.

Can an attack like Nice be stopped? If we want to live in a free and open society, then no security infrastructure could ever remove all the risks. But there are really effective methods to stop truck attacks and six years ago I saw them tested - and they can work. 

With careful planning, cities can be “hardened” by the creative use of special barriers and bollards capable of withstanding direct impacts - stopping a truck from reaching its goal. Anyone who walks past Parliament in London will notice the barriers that surround it. But public spaces in many British cities now have anti-vehicle attack infrastructure that nobody ever notices. 

When the French authorities investigate how this truck attacker was able to cause such devastation, they will have to ask themselves whether they had done everything they could to prepare and protect for such an atrocity. 

More from the Lenval Foundation children's hospital in Nice, which says it has treated some 50 children and adolescents injured in the Bastille Day attack, including two who died during or after surgery. 

Stephanie Simpson, the hospital's communications director, has told the Associated Press agency their injuries included fractures and head injuries, saying some of them were in a condition that was "still life and death".

The hospital is offering psychological counselling to parents and siblings of the victims. 

The hospital, equipped with one of France's largest pediadiatric emergency units, has also called the families of children it was already treating before the attack to ask them to pick up their children in order to free up rooms for the attack victims.

There has been more from London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has said the capital will review its safety measures in light of the Nice attack. 

He declared London would "stand united" with France and insisted the "poisonous and twisted" terrorists would be defeated. 

Speaking on a visit to Gatwick Airport, Mr Khan said: "I will reassure all Londoners that today we will be reviewing our own safety measures in light of this attack and that I and the Metropolitan Police commissioner will do everything possible to keep Londoners safe." 

French National Assembly member for the Alpes-Maritimes department Eric Ciotti has been describing the last minutes of the attack on France's Europe 1 radio station, saying some people tried to escape the attack by going into the sea.

He said one person jumped on to the truck to try to stop it, saying: "It's at that moment that the police were able to neutralize this terrorist. I won't forget the look of this policewoman who intercepted the killer."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced he will be "reviewing our own safety measures" in light of the attack in Nice, the Press Association reports. 

Germany will boost border controls at airports as well as road and rail crossings into France after the truck attack in Nice, Reuters has reported the Federal Police as saying. 

"In coordination with the French security authorities the federal police are strengthening their control in the area of cross-border traffic into France," the police said in a statement. 

The attacker's lorry travelled 2km (1.2 miles) through the Bastille Day crowds on the Promenade des Anglais, killing and wounding dozens as it went. Eyewitnesses reported it swerved and zigzagged in an apparent attempt to hit more people.
