What's been happening in Ukraine?published at 07:16 British Summer Time 6 May 2022
If you're just joining us, here's a recap of what's happened today:
- The UN said it would aim to evacuate more civilians from Mariupol after 500 people were safely moved from the city on Thursday
- UN chief António Guterres said it was imperative to get people out of "these hellscapes"
- Ukraine said Russia was continuing to shell the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol where at least 200 civilians were sheltered with the last of the city's defenders. The Ukraine military said Russian troops were attacking the plant to try and take control of it
- The efforts in Azovstal have come at personnel, equipment and munitions cost to Russia, the UK Ministry of Defence said on Friday. As Ukrainian resistance continues at the plant, Russian losses will continue to build and frustrate their operational plans in Donbas, it said
- The Pentagon said it gave Ukraine intelligence but did not participate in the military's decision-making process after multiple news reports said the US had helped the Ukrainian military target and kill several Russian generals
- Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian troops had destroyed or damaged nearly 400 healthcare institutions in the country. Areas under Russian occupation also faced a “catastrophic” lack of access to medical services and medicine, he said
