  3. What's happening in Ukraine?published at 11:21 British Summer Time 15 May 2023

After months of stalemate, a Ukrainian counteroffensive - helped by newly-arrived Western weapons - has been openly discussed.

But, as we’ve reported, Ukraine's president told our correspondent Hugo Bachega on Thursday it was too early to start the attack.

When and where the Ukrainian push will happen is not known. Russian forces, meanwhile, have fortified their defences along a frontline that runs for 900 miles (1,450km) from the eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, to Zaporizhzhia and Kherson in the south.

Nearly a fifth of Ukraine is under Russian occupation and Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared the annexation of four regions his forces partially occupy.

But there are some signs the Ukrainians may be pushing forward. On Friday Ukraine said it had recaptured ground in Bakhmut, a rare advance after months of grinding Russian gains in the eastern city.

Kyiv said its forces advanced 2km (1.2 miles) in a week - while Russia said its troops had changed their position for strategic reasons.

  4. Russia takes 'extremely negative' view of UK supportpublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 15 May 2023

As President Zelensky meets UK PM Rishi Sunak near London, Russia says it takes an "extremely negative" view of Britain supplying long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles, as well as new military drones, to Ukraine.

But the Kremlin said in today's statement it does not believe the aid will change the outcome of the war.

On Saturday, Russia claimed Britain's Storm Shadow missiles were used by Ukraine to strike two industrial areas in the Russian-held city of Luhansk.

"Storm Shadow air-to-air missiles supplied to the Kyiv regime by Britain were used for the strike, contrary to London's statements that these weapons would not be used against civilian targets," Russia's defence ministry said.

  5. UK can't gift weapons forever - Ellwoodpublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 15 May 2023

The UK cannot empty its "cupboards of military hardware" to keep supplying Ukraine with weapons, the chair of the defence select committee said.

Tobias Ellwood said Britain has been at the forefront of supporting Ukraine with military aid, but that Nato allies need to "collectively stand together" in bolstering Kyiv's defence.

"Frankly, this should be Nato's mission and it's not," he told BBC News.

"And yet here we have almost like a bidding war between different nations to say 'I'm going to send this, I'm going to send that' and then finally others then follow suit.

"If we're committed to supporting Ukraine this needs to be a collective agenda," he added.

Ellwood said the defence select committee is reviewing how sustainable sending weapons to Ukraine is.

"We can't keep gifting weapon systems forever," he said. "Ukraine needs to be able to build its own weapons, have its own manufacturing capabilities."

  10. Analysis

UK one of Ukraine's most important alliespublished at 10:06 British Summer Time 15 May 2023

    Hugo Bachega
    Ukraine correspondent in Kyiv

The UK has been one of Ukraine’s most important allies in the war, and it became the first country to provide longer-range missiles, allowing the Ukrainian military to strike Russian positions away from the frontlines.

As part of the visit, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will announce that there is more help on the way.

In his European tour, the president has also discussed the prospect of peace negotiations, at a time China is trying to act as a possible mediator, and defended his 10-point peace plan as the basis for any talks.

The proposal calls for the return of all invaded territory, reparation payments for war-related damages and the creation of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian war crimes, a plan that Moscow has flatly rejected.

With nearly a fifth of this country under occupation, the next phase of the war will likely be extremely difficult and, amid high expectations, Ukrainian officials have tried to manage hopes of immediate, substantive gains.

One official told me this is unlikely to be a “silver bullet” in the war.

  16. Analysis

Zelensky told me Ukraine needed to wait before attackingpublished at 09:18 British Summer Time 15 May 2023

    Hugo Bachega
    Ukraine correspondent in Kyiv

The UK is the latest stop in President Zelensky’s tour of European countries, which saw him visit Italy, Germany, and France on the weekend.

The idea is to boost Western support and push for more weapons, and faster.

Ukrainian officials have frequently complained of delays in the arrival of promised aid, while saying they still do not have everything they need for their much-anticipated counter-offensive.

Last week, Zelensky told me that his country still had to wait to launch this assault.

His military, he said, was still waiting for some equipment, including armoured vehicles.

The expected attack could be decisive in the war, after months of attrition warfare that kept the frontlines unchanged.

This will also be a crucial test for Kyiv, eager to prove that the help it has received from the west can result in significant battlefield gains.

Major advances could guarantee continued support.

Anything that is seen as disappointing could result in pressure to enter negotiations with Moscow, something that Zelensky acknowledged as a possibility.

  17. UK to supply hundreds of attack drones and missiles - No 10published at 09:16 British Summer Time 15 May 2023

The UK will send "hundreds" of long-range attack drones and air defence missiles to Ukraine, Downing Street said on Monday morning.

"Today the prime minister will confirm the further UK provision of hundreds of air defence missiles and further unmanned aerial systems including hundreds of new long-range attack drones with a range of over 200km," No 10 said in a statement.

"These will all be delivered over the coming months as Ukraine prepares to intensify its resistance to the ongoing Russian invasion."

Though the announcement of more drones seems to be new, we already knew the UK was sending a batch of long-range missiles to Ukraine - that was announced on Thursday.

We'll be bringing you analysis of what this means for Ukraine's war effort.

  18. Taxpayer support for Ukraine is worth it - UK ministerpublished at 09:05 British Summer Time 15 May 2023

UK trade minister Nigel Huddleston says President Zelensky will ask for more support from the UK when he meets Rishi Sunak this morning.

"We've got a strong partnership with Ukraine and President Zelensky in particular, and this is all part of building that continuing relationship," he's been telling LBC.

"I do think our Ukrainian friends appreciate the support we've given them to date, and I expect they're coming here...with President Zelensky, to ask for more."

On the UK giving more support, he says: "To be honest we're continually providing more, whether that's military aid and support, and of course that does come at considerable cost to UK taxpayers - but we believe it's worth it, because we support our friends and allies in need."

This isn't Zelensky's first visit to the UK.

The Ukrainian president first held talks with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Downing Street in February, before an audience with King Charles and a speech to Parliament.

The visit coincided with the expansion of the UK training of Ukrainian forces and the announcement of a fresh round of sanctions targeting Russia.

It was the first time Zelensky had visited the UK since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year.

Less than 24 hours ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in Paris, as he paid a surprise visit to French President Emmanuel Macron.

The pair discussed a "peace formula" and further military support for Ukraine, as Kyiv plans a counteroffensive against Russia.

Following talks with Zelensky in Berlin, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz vowed to back Ukraine "for as long as it is necessary", promising €2.7bn (£2.4bn) worth of weapons.

In Rome, Zelensky met Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who assured the Ukrainian president of Italy's support for a united Ukraine.

Zelensky also met the Pope, who stressed the urgent need to help "the most fragile people, innocent victims" of the Russian invasion.
