  2. Charles to get gift for environmental work - but timing might be awkwardpublished at 09:26 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

The King is expected to get a symbolic pot of honey from the French Senate - or Sénat - in recognition of his campaigning over the environmental and climate change.

But is there a different message going on at home with Rishi Sunak accused by some of putting net zero on the back burner?

Whatever the King’s private thoughts, sources suggest there won’t be any public lobbying or criticism of the PM over the environment.

It’s worth remembering that state visits are carried out on the advice of the government and the King will be expected to maintain political neutrality.

That being said, the timing is, as they say, awks.

  3. First British monarch to speak at France's Senatepublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    Sean Coughlan
    Reporting from Paris

After the grandeur of a Versailles state banquet last night, King Charles is getting more of the bling treatment, when he visits the French Senate.

The ornate upper chamber of the French Parliament is a blizzard of gold and red. It feels a bit like a fancy opera house.

When the King, “le Roi Charles III,” addresses senators here this morning it will be the first time a British monarch has given a speech on the Senate floor.

We're bringing our coverage of day one of King Charles' and Queen Camilla's three-day state visit to France to a close for the night.

It's been a hectic day for the King and Queen, as they kicked off their visit at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, where they were greeted by President Macron and his wife Brigette, before heading to talks at the Elysée Palace.

They later finished the night at a state banquet at the Palace of Versailles, where they were joined by famous guests including Hugh Grant, Arsene Wenger and Didier Drogba.

Our coverage was written by Jacqueline Howard, Alex Smith and Thomas Mackintosh. It was edited by Heather Sharp and Natasha Preskey.

You can read more about the day's events from our royal correspondent Sean Coughlan here.

Parisians struggle to catch glimpse of King Charlespublished at 21:19 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

It would be impossible to say how the French public responded to the King and Queen. Such state visits are dominated by a huge road-blocking security operation.

And in Paris, it wasn't liberte, egalite, fraternite but intead securite, securite, securite. There was little chance for the French crowds to see the King and Queen.

At the Arc de Triomphe there were soldiers, police and a big media contingent, but the ordinary Parisians were kept far away behind security barriers.

It was the same in Versailles, with a secure distance between the diners at the banquet and the ordinary people that the Sun King Louis XIV would have appreciated.

This was the first of a three-day visit, with the King set to give a speech to the Senate and travel to eco-projects in Bordeaux. So expect more photo-opportunities as the heads of state of the two countries show each other a taste of the entente cordiale.

Continuing his speech, the King took a diplomatic approach to the sporting elephant in the room - the Rugby World Cup - saying only "may the best team win!"

Looking ahead to the future, the King said it was important to tackle climate change and grow together to be strong, vital and prosperous.

"Working together, with ambition and determination, who knows how far we can reach," he said.

He then proposed a toast to President Macron and his wife Brigitte, and to the French people - "as well as to our entente cordiale - a sustainable alliance".

We had been expecting to be able to bring you the King's speech at the banquet live, but the video feeds stopped unexpectedly - we're not sure why.

However, we can now tell you a bit of what he said, delivering part of the speech in French, and the rest in English.

King Charles said he and Queen Camilla were "enormously touched by the magnificent welcome" they received in France.

He then thanked Emmanuel Macron for his tributes to the late Queen Elizabeth II a year ago, and said the flying of the Union Jack at the Elysée was "particularly poignant".

On the itinerary for tomorrow is a visit to Notre Dame, and the King says he was "utterly appalled" by the devastation caused by a fire four years ago.

As neighbours, Britain and France has long been fascinated by each other, he says, pointing to shared histories.

"Mr President, in all of this we can rely on our firm friendship, which is renewed and reinvigorated with each new generation," he said.

The King, Queen and French President have arrived at the Palace of Versailles, where they will dine in the Hall of Mirrors, joined by some 160 guests - including the celebrities we've seen arriving, as well as a wide range of dignitaries and figures from politics and business.

But what will they be eating?

On the menu is blue lobster and crab followed by Bresse poultry and mushroom gratin.

There will also be a course of cheeses, with the selection including French Comté and British Stichelton blue.

For dessert, it's rose macaroon cookie, composed of rose petal cream, raspberries and lychees.

As the sun sets over Paris, King Charles and Queen Camilla arrive at the Palace of Versailles.

Blue flashing lights from the police officers on motorbikes accompany the royal car as it enter the palace grounds.

Silence greets the car initially, but is interrupted by a fanfare from a French military brass band.

President Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron greet the King and Queen - Macron kisses the Queen's hand as the four share some words on the red carpet.

Photographers shout out "Your Majesty" to try and get his attention against the backdrop of a French tricolore floating above the palace.

Next to strut along the Palace of Versailles courtyard is another Arsenal legend.

Arsène Wenger, who is currently serving as FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development, is dressed in a black suit and tie for tonight's banquet as the photographers' lights flash against the darkening Parisian sky.

The Frenchman was the manager of Arsenal from 1996 to 2018, where he was the longest-serving and most successful in the club's history.

He waves to photographers and shouts "merci" as he carries on walking into the Palace.

Just before him was French PM Élisabeth Borne whom we saw earlier greeting the King and Queen as they got off their plane at Paris Orly Airport.

There’s still some sunshine glinting off the gold at the Palace of Versailles, where President Macron will be hosting a state banquet for the King, Queen and 160 guests, including a sprinkling of celebrities.

'Bon soir’ shouts Mick Jagger going into the state banquet at Versailles.

There has been speculation all day whether the Rolling Stone would be rolling in to see the King.

He was just ahead of UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who didn’t quite cause as much of a stir when he arrived.

Hugh Grant and Charlotte Gainsbourg are already inside.

Even those of the guests who aren’t famous are behaving as if they are, posing for photographers and taking their own selfies in the huge, glittering courtyard of Versailles.

We've seen more notable arrivals coming to Chateau de Versailles including former Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba - although no iconic knee slide today.

Wearing a sharp black suit and black tie, the Chelsea legend linked arms with his partner Gabrielle Lemaire as he paced across the courtyard and onto the red carpet.

The pair smiled for photos before making their way inside.

Inside, Drogba will join fellow former Premier League star Patrick Vieria.

The former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder amassed an impressive 106 caps for the French national football team.
