    Geraghty says the scene remains sealed off at this time and technical examination of the scene is ongoing.

    An incident room has been established at gardai station and a senior investigating officer has been appointed.

    Gardai are following a "definite line of inquiry" - a male in his 50s is a person of interest in the investigation and the Gardai is not looking for any other person.

    Gardai continue to have "an open mind at this early time," Geraghty says.

    Supt Liam Geraghty tells assembled press that the force is still investigating the circumstances of the incident.

    He says a male attacked a number of people and that one girl, who is five, suffered serious injuries and is receiving emergency treatment in CHI Temple Street.

    A boy who is five and a girl who is six were taken to CHI Crumlin with less serious injuries and the boy has already been discharged.

    An adult woman in her 30s is being treated for serious injuries at the Mater Hospital.

    An adult man in his 50s is being treated for serious injuries at a hospital in the Dublin region.

    I'm at the scene of the reported stabbing in Dublin.

    I can see a row of police cars lining Parnell Square East.

    Behind the white tape gardaí in bright yellow vests watch as double decker buses are moved away from the scene.

    In driving drizzle, curious onlookers ask camera crews and journalists what has happened.

    As darkness falls the blue lights of police cars flash as offices arrive and leave.

    It looks like many of the police will be here for some time yet.

    Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald says the attack has sent shock and horror throughout the community.

    “I am horrified by the incident that has happened in Parnell Square today. There is shock throughout the community," she says.

    McDonald says she has spoken to the principal of a school nearby.

    “I have just spoken to the Principal of Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire and relayed my support to the school community.

    “I want to send my solidarity to the families of those attacked. As a parent, I can only imagine what they are going through right now.

    “The community in the north inner-city stands with them."

    An eyewitness has told how she saw "bedlam" unfold as bystanders tried to disarm a man with a knife.

    "Without thinking, I just took across the road to help out," Siobhan Kearney told RTÉ.

    "Two children and the woman were taken back into the school where they were coming from."

    She said that a man was on the ground while people tried to restrain him.

    "Me and an American lady formed a ring around him saying we'd wait on the garda (police)," she said.

    "We got another young man, disarmed him [the attacker] with the knife, another man took the knife and put it away for the garda (police) to find it," she said.

    Parnell Square East is in the heart of Dublin.

    It borders the Garden of Remembrance and runs south to O'Connell Street, one of the main thoroughfares in the Irish capital.

    Medical staff rushed to the scene of the suspected stabbing from the nearby Rotunda Hospital to help, Irish media reports.

    The injured have been taken to different hospitals, including Children's Health Ireland at Crumlin, and the Mater Hospital, RTÉ says.

    Gardaí (Irish police) say they are following a "definite line of inquiry" and are not looking for any other person at this time.

    Some disruption to transport has been reported around the area, which police have sealed off.

    There is no access from Dorset Street to O'Connell Street - one of the city's most well-known areas.

    Irish transport service Bus Éireann says there is some disruption to its services.

    Routes 103, 109, 109Z, 111 and NX will be diverted inbound via Gardiner Street until further notice.

    Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Leo Varadkar says he is shocked by the incident in Parnell Square, in which three of children have been injured.

    "Our thoughts and our prayers go out to them and their families", he says.

    Varadkar says a suspect has been detained by police, who are following a "definite line of inquiry".

    He adds that he has been in touch with Justice Minister Helen McEntee and that details about what happened are still emerging.

    Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee says she is "deeply shocked by the appalling attack on three innocent children and a woman" in Dublin.

    She says that her thoughts are with the "innocent children and the woman who have been attacked" and their loved ones.

    She's been briefed by the Garda commissioner (the Republic of Ireland's most senior police officer) and says she'll remain in close contact with senior gardaí.

    "This attack has shocked us all, and I have no doubt that the person responsible will be brought to justice," McEntee adds.

    This is their statement in full:

    "An Garda Síochána are investigating all the circumstances of a serious public order incident which occurred on Parnell Square East, shortly after 13.30 this afternoon Thursday, 23 November 2023.

    "Five casualties have been taken to various hospitals in the Dublin Region. The casualties include an adult male, an adult female and three young children.

    "One child, a girl, has sustained serious injuries, the other two children are being treated for less serious injuries.

    "An Garda Síochána is in contact with parents of all three injured children.

    "The adult female is being treated for serious injuries and the adult male for less serious injuries.

    "The scene remains sealed off at this time.

    "An Garda Síochána is following a definite line of inquiry. An Garda Síochána is not looking for any other person at this time. There is no further information.

    "An Garda spokesperson is not available and an update will be provided later this afternoon."

    The force says five casualties, including three young children and a man and a woman, have been taken to hospital.
