Russia says it's asked the Czech representative to attend a meeting of the UN Security Council later today "to explain why his country’s ammunition is being used to killing civilians in Belgorod".

Dmitry Polyanskiy - a Russian representative at the UN - was likely referring to a statement made by the Russian defence ministry, which alleged that several Czech-made Vampire rockets were used to attack Belgorod earlier.

In response, the Czech foreign minister said his country would not be summoned "anywhere". He added: "The Czech Republic will not serve the aggressor's propaganda poisoned with lies."

The BBC is not able to verify the Russian claims. It's unlikely that Vampires could reach Belgorod from Ukrainian territory, without modification work to boost the range of the round.

For its part, Ukraine blames the Russian air defence for falling fragments in Belgorod city centre.

Over three months ago, Ukraine’s military intelligence openly pledged to retaliate if Russia attacked Ukrainian power stations amid the cold of the winter.

But what happened during Russian strikes on Friday went far beyond the previous massive air assaults on Ukrainian power grids - this time the entire country came under the barrage of nearly every type of Russian missiles.

Ukrainian rescuers are still looking for missing people. And the death toll has reached 39 people.

There is the widespread understanding and even consensus in Ukraine that if the Western aid continues to wane, Russia will get a stimulus to carry out more and more assaults of that scale and magnitude.

Air defence weapons which are used to intercept ballistic missiles, for example, can cost millions of dollars. And Ukraine doesn’t have a lot of them.

So, many believe that if Ukraine carries out attacks in retaliation, it won’t face even more danger from Russia. It’s already there.

And in Kharkiv, civilian infrastructure has reportedly been damaged by air strikes. In his own Telegram post, Oleg Sinegubov, the head of the regional administration, accuses Russia of striking "more than six blows".

He says some of these hit central parts of the city of Kharkiv - somewhere we reported shelling a bit earlier. The BBC has verified images of damaged buildings in the city.

Intense Russian shelling on Friday hit several civilian targets across Ukraine, with more than 150 missiles and drones fired at Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Kharkiv.

Ukraine's air force said it had never seen so many missiles launched at once.

Videos from one of today’s strikes on Belgorod show victims - including possible fatalities - in the city centre. The BBC is choosing not to show the footage, but we have verified the location.

Both videos show a busy street next to a cinema. One clip shows a pile-up of cars, some of which are on fire, and at least one person lying motionless on the road.

The sound of loud bangs and car horns can be heard throughout. Before thick black smoke obscures the scene, we see somebody running to assist the person lying on the road.

A second clip, taken around 50m away, shows more people lying on the ground. One is covered in an orange sheet - another is seen receiving CPR. Glass and debris can be seen in the street.

Other footage we have verified shows damage to buildings in several other locations around the city centre, indicating multiple strikes.

The source was also quoted as saying that Ukrainian forces were attacking in response to Russian strikes on Ukraine yesterday, which killed at least 39 people, according to President Zelensky.

Russia earlier said that several Ukrainian rockets and cluster parts from shot-down missiles had hit Belgorod, killing 14 people and injuring more than 100.
