    Cameron Chalmers has been named the Guernsey Sports Commission Outstanding Performer of 2016.

    The 19-year-old 400m runner made the semi-finals of the World Under-20 Championships last summer, setting a new personal best and island U20 record of 46.51 seconds in the process.

    Guernsey's men's hockey team were honoured for winning the EH Trophy and making the third round of the EH Cup while tennis player Heather Watson was also recognised with an award.

    "Hopefully this year I can push on further," Chalmers told BBC Radio Guernsey. "You don't want to rush things, but sometimes it's hard not to be impatient because you always want the next thing as soon as you achieve one thing in sport, I think that's the mindset you have to be in to get to the top level."

    More than four million journey's were made on Jersey's bus network last year, according to operator LibertyBus.

    The company has released the results for its latest independent customer satisfaction survey, which looked at various aspects of the service including how people are accessing information. 

    Nearly 60% of people are using the internet to find out about the buses, while 11% of people are using the Track My Bus app which was launched at the beginning of last year.

    The purity of cocaine seized by authorities in Jersey has been revealed by a Freedom of Information request. 

    Not all seized cocaine is tested but where testing was carried out since 2012, purity ranged from only 3% to 83% pure. 

    Most of the drugs tested were between 10% and 20% pure. The figures also show that on one occasion the authorities seized 0.04 grams of cocaine.

    The deputy who resigned from the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture is keen to become an advisor to the Committee, specialising in sport.

    Deputy Marc Leadbeater resigned his post in December ahead of the vote of no confidence, which the committee subsequently survived by 22 votes to 13.

    He's concerned the sport aspect of the committee's agenda may lose out, given that few of the current members have a specific interest in it.

    Deputy Leadbeater says he's already in talks with the President of the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, Deputy Paul Le Pelley, about an advisory role.

    More frequent buses, a later or night service and a new circle route are the top changes people using Jersey's bus service want to see over the next twelve months, according to operator LibertyBus.

    A union official has warned that teachers won't look to work in Guernsey while the future of secondary education remains uncertain.

    Regional secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Andy Wooley, says in the wake of the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture surviving its vote of no confidence, it now has to press ahead with making plans for the future.

    He says until those changes are decided, teachers looking to leave the UK for a new role won't be looking to Guernsey.

    Tonight it will be a dry, clear and cold night, with a widespread frost. There may be the odd wintry shower through the night. Winds will be easing. Minimum Temperature: 3 Deg C (37 Deg F).

    People in Jersey are being invited to take part in the 11th annual Genuine Jersey Royal Potato Growing Competition.

    The event challenges people to grow the heaviest crop of Jersey Royals. Over 7,000 children, from 32 primary schools took part in the competition last year.

    John Garton, Chief Executive of Genuine Jersey says the competition helps give children a greater understanding of how Jersey Royals are grown, and their importance to Island agriculture and history.

    Unemployment in Jersey has fallen to its lowest level for six years. In December 1,280 people were registered with Social Security as looking for employment – down 30 on the previous month and 110 on December 2015, external.

    There has been no damage reported despite a flood warning for Guernsey's west coast.

    Tides of 9.7m at 06:57 and force eight winds led to the warning of potential flooding along the coast but so far all seems to be clear.

    Ferry company, Condor, has cancelled its fast ferry sailings between Guernsey, Jersey, St Malo and Poole today and tomorrow due to high winds.

    The company says the weather conditions were "in excess of the legal limits" for its high speed ferries. 

    Condor says it has put extra staff into its reservations department to let passengers know and help re-book them or issue a refund. 

  16. Scrutiny looks to delay debate on changes to judge appointment processpublished at 07:47 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2017

    It's been claimed a new system to appoint Jersey's senior judges could be swayed by political interests.

    Scrutiny has asked members to delay debating the changes while they're reviewed by the committee.

    At the moment, the States Employment Board, chaired by the chief minister, chooses members of the Jersey Appointments Commission, which is then responsible for taking on various officers for the island.

    Under new plans, the commission would also be responsible for producing guidelines for appointing senior judges and would oversee their recruitment.

    Some politicians, such as Deputy Simon Bree, argue that the new process could leave the system open to political influence.
