A RNLI spokesman said: "The information offered was advice on running costs for a station and a lifeboat as well as key regulators and areas of compliance which must be met in order to set up a lifeboat service."

The new service is to be provided by the Jersey Lifeboat Association (JLA), who today announced their status as an official charity.

Crewing the association's lifeboats will be the former RNLI St Helier crew, who split from the organisation last year.

The RNLI has also announced it wants to work "collaboratively" with the JLA, as it does with other independent stations across the UK.

"Our priority is always the protection of those who live on, and use, the coast," the charity said.

  6. Independent lifeboat association gets charity statuspublished at 17:03 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

The Jersey Lifeboat Association (JLA) has been granted charity status, members say.

The organisation was formed after the former crew of the RNLI station in St Helier announced they wanted to split from the charity, after talks between RNLI bosses and the crew broke down.

Now a registered charity, the JLA says it is working with the former crew and their coxswain Andy Hibbs.

Mr Hibbs recently said he was testing an all-weather lifeboat for the association to bring to the island.

Chairman Ben Shenton said all the money donated to the association would be "fully accountable and identifiable".

"The appreciation and respect of volunteers shall be at the forefront of everything that we do", Mr Shenton said.

He also added he was "pleased" the RNLI had offered to give assistance in establishing the association.

The RNLI could not confirm this, but a spokesman said it was "not unusual" for the charity to work "alongside" independent stations.

    Gareth Owen

He also backed a non-government initiative to promote the value of sport tourism to the Bailiwick.

"Part of the problem that we've had has really been the way in which civil servants in tourism have actually said 'this is the way we want to run tourism in Guernsey', because that excludes sport as a way of bringing people in to any meaningful degree."

The States' Economic Development Committee says it's happy to meet with the group to hear their concerns and consider any suggested changes.

    Dave Piesing
    Quote Message

One of the views I've had for quite some time is that sport hasn't been good enough at telling the islands just what it does contribute economically, and I don't think anyone's been quite aware of just how much is already contributed to the island's GDP through sports tourism, and we've got to get better at that."
