  10. Jersey elections: Low turnouts 'a major factor'published at 21:25 British Summer Time 16 May 2018

    Ryan Morrison
    BBC News Online

Jersey is notable for recording some of the lowest turnouts in elections among small jurisdictions worldwide, according to political expert Adrian Lee.

The first time most senators, deputies and constables were elected together in 2011 the most notable effect was a slight increase in turnout - up 1.5% to 45.6%.

    States

It went back down again at the first true general election in 2014 - turnout fell to 39.5% despite the introduction of pre-poll voting and an online and media campaign to encourage people to vote.

Low turnout is even more of a feature in by-elections. Despite some intense campaigning, the 2014 St Helier number one by-election for deputy saw a turnout of 15.1%, but that was high compared to the by-election in St Helier number two where just 12.8% of voters took part.

The last time Jersey went to the polls, for the senatorial by-election in 2015 the turnout was 19.26% - the lowest ever for a senatorial contest in the island.
