    The reign of Senator Ian Gorst as Jersey's third chief minister has come to an end.

    He was first appointed to the island's top political job in 2011.

    Reflecting on his defeat, Senator Gorst said: "That's politics."

    He said his honesty in the debate about who he would select for his Council of Ministers could have been part of why some members did not vote for him.

    But, he added, he was "not prepared to be dishonest to get electoral success" and refused to comment on whether he would accept a position in Senator Le Fondre's government.

  2. Sarah Groves: Witness fails to appear on fifth anniversarypublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 4 June 2018

    The 120th scheduled hearing in the Sarah Groves murder trial took place today, but no progress was made.

    Yesterday marked the fifth anniversary of the start of the trial.

    Guernsey woman Sarah Groves was stabbed to death on a houseboat in Kashmir in 2013.

    No progress was made in court as the witness, Kuldeep Koul, did not appear.

    The judge - who took over the case in August - gave a summary of the day's events, as provided by legal representation in Srinigar and the British High Commission in Delhi.

    Nurses in Guernsey have voted overwhelmingly to accept a new pay offer.

    A total of 96% of Royal College of Nursing (RCN) members which voted said they would accept the offer, which was made available at the start of May.

    The offer includes a 4.25% increase in basic pay from 1 April 2018 to 31 December 2018 as well as a lump sum payment for the 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018.

    Royal College of Nursing Senior Officer, Julie Lewers, said whilst this offer "isn't perfect", it is a significant move in the right direction.

    All RCN members employed by Health and Social Services were asked to vote between 9 May and 3 June, but only 44% of members voted in the ballot.

    The States of Guernsey has also agreed to a complete review of the nursing pay system.

    Jersey's new Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondre says he's "stunned" by the election results.

    He beat Senator Ian Gorst to the role by 30 votes to 19.

    Speaking about his competitor, Senator Le Fondre said despite the fact his competitor had worked "exceptionally hard" over his two terms in office it was "time for a change".

    "Sometimes organisations do need to change just to keep evolving. He said he absolutely wanted Senator Gorst on his "team".

    During his speech, Mr Le Fondre tipped Senator Gorst for external relations minister.

    Senator Le Fondre only revealed three candidates for government ministers during the States sitting, all positions will be chosen on the 7 and 8 June.

  5. Chief minister debate: Voting anomaly discoveredpublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 4 June 2018

    A glitch in the States Assembly's electronic voting system, which showed Senator John Le Fondre vote for his competitor for chief minister, has been clarified.

    Staff at the States Assembly found the fault and confirmed it was Senator Tracey Vallois who voted for Senator Gorst, with Senator Le Fondre voting for himself.

    Senator John Le Fondre was elected as Jersey's fourth chief minister by 30 votes to 19.

  7. Riding on Val des Terres pavement to be allowedpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 4 June 2018

    Cyclists will soon be able to legally ride up the pavement on Le Val des Terres.

    A new initiative - that coincides with National Bike Week, external - will "provide cyclists with a safer environment to travel up the steep hill, while also helping to improve traffic flow for all vehicles going up Le Val des Terres.

    A statement from the Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure said: "Cyclists will need to ride on the road as far as the first corner where La Vallette ‘zig-zag’ steps join Le Val des Terres and then cross the road, giving way to oncoming traffic, and cycling uphill on the footpath until they reach the junction with George Road.

    "At this point they can re-join the main traffic flow.

    "Pedestrians and cyclists will need to share the path with care and courtesy."

    The new rules will be introduced on 9 June.

    The hill is famously steep and windy, and has been used for the Guernsey Hill Climb, external for decades.

    When asked about one of Jersey's biggest public projects, the building of the new hospital, Senator John Le Fondre said a "short sharp review" would take place if he was elected chief minister.

    He said the project had "captured the public's imagination in a negative way" and was the one of the biggest issues in "a decade".

    Senator Le Fondre added he would want final decisions on the hospital to be made by Christmas.

    Senator Ian Gorst is campaigning to retain his position of chief minister for a third term.

    He says he wants to lead the government "in a constructive partnership with scrutiny", and said the position "isn't an easy job" which takes "a while to grow into".

    Senator Gorst mentioned representing the island in the UK during Brexit negotiations and in talks on financial transparency and regulation.

    He said his reforms of government had been "slower" than he had wanted, but he remained optimistic.

    Answering a question on income inequality, Senator Ian Gorst said, if elected, he would - within six weeks - create an affordable housing commission to "drive down house prices".

    He said a recent survey had revealed inflation has led to those in the rental sector being worse off.

    Other members, such as Reform Jersey's Montfort Tadier, are sceptical, saying the situation has become worse under his leadership.

    Laws that govern how and when people in Guernsey can get married are set to be updated as the Policy and Resources Committee launches a public consultation.

    The need to change the 99-year-old laws was identified as part of the work that led to same-sex marriage last year.

    Any changes to the law could mean liberalising the rules over who can marry people, as well as where and when a ceremony can take place.

    Currently a marriage ceremony can only take place in a small number of locations, and can't be held outdoors.

    Deputy Mike Higgins has challenged Senator Ian Gorst to reveal who he has offered government roles to.

    Senator Gorst says he would like:

    • His competitor for chief minister, Senator John Le Fondre as treasury minister
    • Deputy Carolyn Labey as minister for external relations
    • Deputy Susie Pinel as the minister for heath and social services
    • Deputy Steve Luce to return as the environment minister
    • As home affairs minister once again, Senator Kristina Moore
    • Senator Lyndon Farnham to return as minister for the economy, sport, tourism and culture
    • As housing minister, Senator Sam Mezec
    • As education minister, Senator Tracey Vallois
    • Senator Steve Pallett as assistant chief minister

    He added there were a few open portfolios, social security and infrastructure, which he could not be clear on. For health and social security he said he is considering both Deputy Richard Renouf and Deputy Judy Martin.

    However, he said he hasn't been so lucky finding someone for the department of infrastructure.

    The States of Guernsey is in session tomorrow, debating the Policy and Resources Committee Plan.

    The latest amendment, external is from Deputy Carl Meerveld, who wants the Committee for Environment and Infrastructure to compile a report on the potential impact of future developments in the north of the island.

    There are often complaints that much of the island's developments take place in the north of Guernsey.

    "Such development might include over 1200 dwellings, a waste transfer station, possibly a 1,400 student school, the expansion of Oatlands.

    "There is also the possibility of commercial developments at several sites in this area."

    Aurigny is launching a "Willy Wonka" style Golden Ticket competition where you could win free return flights., external

    As long as you can avoid turning into a giant blueberry or drowning in chocolate - which has been mixed by waterfall of course - you could find yourself on a flight free of charge.

    Five golden tickets will be hidden around the Bailiwick of Guernsey on specific days, with clues given on social media as to where they might be.

    It's all part of Aurigny's 50th anniversary.

    Jersey sailor Phil Sharp and partner Julien Pulvé have won the six-day 2018 Normandy Channel Race by just six seconds.

    The duo, on board Imerys Clean Energy, beat Carac skippered by Louis Duc and Gwen Riou by just a few metres at the end of 1,100 miles of racing.

    The Normandy Channel Race starts and ends in the French port of Caen going via the Isle of Wight, Wolf Rock off Land's End, Tuskar Rock of the south-east tip of Ireland and around Fastnet.

    “Just before the final mark, I thought we were dead in the water,” said Sharp after the race.

    “There was one last gybe to put in and there was little chance it would work, but we managed to slip along like a dream to windward of Carac.”
