    Jersey's Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondre, has announced who will serve as Assistant Ministers in the new government.

    Senator Le Fondre has appointed St John Constable Chris Taylor, St Ouen Constable Richard Buchanan and Grouville Deputy Carolyn Labey.

    Constable Buchanan will also work alongside Senator Ian Gorst in External Relations.

    Senator Steve Pallet, who missed out on leading the Infrastructure Department, will be an assistant minister in both the economic development and health departments.

    Meanwhile three new States members will serve as assistant ministers - Deputy Hugh Raymond for health, Deputy Greogry Guida in environment and home affairs and Deputy Linsday Ash in treasury.

    A man was "struck" by another in an incident at a food kiosk in Jersey, police have said.

    Officers say a third man was then injured as the attacker drove away from the scene in St Lawrence last night.

    It happened at the Burger Kiosk on Victoria Avenue on Thursday, some time between 23:25 - 23:45.

    The man is thought to have driven off in a silver car.

  4. Education says 'no crisis' in teacher staffingpublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    Jersey's education department says there is no crisis in teacher recruitment and that it is normal for there to be teaching vacancies at the end of the school year.

    It comes after Jersey teaching unions claimed applications for posts are definitely declining and that not enough people are applying for teaching jobs in the island.

    There are currently 11 vacancies for teachers and teaching assistants in Jersey on the States website.

    The Education Department says teaching staff need to hand in their notices in time to start their new jobs in the next school year, and allow the schools where they work to fill the posts.

    Hundreds of Guernsey schoolchildren have been taking part in the annual Safety Calling Challenge.

    Faced with seven realistic scenarios, 10 and 11-year-olds learn how to stay safe on the roads, how to escape a fire and how to perform CPR.

    The challenge has now been running for 21 years and 640 pupils took part this year.

  6. Man wearing turban 'racially abused' in St Helierpublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    A man wearing a turban has been racially abused in St Helier, States of Jersey Police have said.

    It happened in King Street on Wednesday near Marks and Spencer at about 17:30. Officers said a man in his late 30s to early 40s also shouted abuse at other people in the area.

    He's been described as unshaven with short dark hair and a small tattoo under his eye.

  7. 'Third of top civil servants could lose their jobs'published at 14:15 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    The number of senior civil servants working in Jersey will drop from 66 to 40 as part of wider restructuring, according to new Chief Executive Charlie Parker.

    Mr Parker outlined changes to his plans for restructuring the States of Jersey after a 45-day consultation with senior leaders and a 90-day consultation with staff.

    He reviewed about 240 suggestions and questions in relation to the plans he revealed in March.

    The plans included all senior civil servants having to re-apply for their jobs as specific roles were changing. So far 21 have been appointed from within the civil service. The rest will be recruited through open competition.

    Mr Parker said the aim was to make the service more efficient and more joined up across departments.

  9. Zsuzsanna Besenyei: Funeral can go aheadpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    The funeral of a woman whose body was found on a St Ouen beach, can now go ahead after an inquest into her death was opened today.

    DNA from the toothbrush of Zsuzsanna Besenyei, 37, was used to identify her body after it was discovered at Stinky Bay last month.

    The inquest heard she will be cremated in Jersey and her remains will be sent back to Hungary where she was born.

    Jamie Lee Warn, 54, was charged in May with her murder and remanded in custody until his next court appearance on 25 June.

    Portuguese people in Jersey are looking forward to their team's first match of the World Cup tonight.

    When Portugal reached the semi-finals in 2006 thousands of fans lined the streets of St Helier in celebration.

    There will be a big screen at Springfield Stadium in St Helier for fans to enjoy the game against traditional rivals Spain.

    Carlos Nunes from the Funchal St Helier twinning committee says it can be a great occasion to make friends from other countries.

    According to the last census in 2011 there were more than 7,000 people living in Jersey that were born in Portugual or Madeira.

  11. Students 'could be ambassadors against bullying'published at 12:05 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    Hundreds of Jersey students could soon be ambassadors against bullying as part of a new initiative run by a national charity.

    An anti-bullying team from the Diana Award charity is speaking to students at Highlands College and D'Auvergne Primary school.

    The group hope to be able to train hundreds of Jersey children to stand up to bullying and act as anti-bullying ambassadors in their schools where they can work with teachers and other pupils.

    The Diana Award was set up in the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales to celebrate young people who create sustaining and positive social change.

  12. Triathlon needs 50 volunteers on 1 Julypublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    Organisers of this year's Jersey Triathlon say they need 50 volunteers to help on the day of the event.

    About 500 competitors are set to take part on 1 July, which starts and finishes at Les Jardins De La Mer in St Helier.

    Volunteers don't need any previous experience, just to be free for between two and four hours in the morning.

  14. Alderney chamber welcomes new ferry movepublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 15 June 2018

    Move to subsidise a ferry between Guernsey and Alderney by the States of Alderney has been welcomed by the island's chamber of commerce.

    The chamber says it is "more than pleased to have had substantial input in the decision for Alderney to have the services of a new ferry company".

    The service will operate twice daily return trips to Guernsey for 11 weeks from early July.

    The UK does not need to take "further steps" to tackle tax avoidance and evasion in Jersey, according to Jersey Finance.

    The organisation submitted written evidence to a UK parliament inquiry, which was published this week, external. Evidence submitted by the States of Guernsey to the same inquiry was also published., external

    The Treasury Sub-Committee, external is looking into "what progress has been made in reducing the amount of tax lost to avoidance and offshore evasion" and how effective overall Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs has been in regaining lost funds.

    Jersey Finance, a non-profit making organisation which aims to represent and promote the island, said Jersey takes a "robust position" in relation to abusive tax avoidance and evasion.

    "There is no requirement for the UK to take further steps to address any perceived problem," a spokesman said.

    It is unclear when a report is due from the select committee.
