Jersey's planning committee has approved plans for 40 new homes and four commercial units on the western edge of St Helier.

The application proposes building on an existing site at 3, Sunnyside, Route de St Aubin.

A planning department report recommended approval of the application.

"The plans were described as delivering new homes and business opportunities, with parking, access and other improvements, in line with the States of Jersey’s objectives for revitalising St Helier," a statement from the department said.

The homes and four commercial units will be built behind the Lotus House Chinese restaurant.

Islanders in Sark are to decide whether laws restricting the use of e-bikes in the island should be abolished.

Currently only people with mobility issues can use them, meaning islanders and tourists have to get a certificate from a doctor before they ride the bikes.

Each household will receive two forms asking residents for their opinion on deregulation in the next four weeks.

Guernsey Police are appealing for information about unwanted items that were dumped on a private driveway along Mont Morin in St Sampson throughout June.

The items left at the property called Deuxieme Chance on multiple occasions included a set of bedroom drawers, one tonne bags containing a large plant pot and recycling, and an old rusted wheelbarrow.

Police are asking any witnesses to come forward and urge residents in the area to be vigilant of anyone dumping waste unlawfully in gardens and driveways.

A former politician who brought plans to reform the election system in Jersey says the island's government must take notice of a damning report by election observers, external.

A group from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association monitored the elections in May.

They've criticised the way electoral districts are set and questioned the future of constables in the States.

Andrew Lewis, who suggested similar changes to some of the recommendations made in the observers report, says it's time to deal with the question of whether the constables should remain in the States.

The States-owned housing company has put forward plans to knock down buildings near the old Ann Street Brewery, so the existing temporary car park there can be extended.

It's part of Andium's ongoing plans to build 165 new homes in the area.

If the plans are approved, properties known as Garden Cottage, Gate's Stores and numbers eight to 10 Simon Place will all be demolished.

A shortage of hotel rooms has delayed the Jersey Reds' first home game of the Championship season.

The Reds were due to face London Irish at St Peter on 15 September, but the club said there's a lack of rooms because of other major events that weekend.

One of the events taking place that weekend is the Jersey International Air Display.

The first Championship home game will now be against Yorkshire Carnegie on 28 September, with the London Irish fixture rescheduled for November.

The Championships fixtures have been announced and Jersey begin with away trips to newcomers Coventry and Bedford.

Jersey's last competitive game at Coventry was when they sealed promotion to the Championship in 2012.

An algae which is "toxic to humans and animals" has been found in Guernsey's main reservoir.

Guernsey Water is looking into the blue-green "algal bloom" in St Saviour's, after routine monitoring.

The government water provider said that blue-green algae exist in waters "throughout the world", and is removed during the treatment process, so there shouldn't be any impact on water supplies.

However as a precautionary measure, notices have been posted next to the reservoir warning that contact with the "algal scum" should be avoided.

Guernsey's leisure centre will launch an online booking system later this month.

Sam Herridge, head of recreation services, said they've been listening to customer feedback for a number of years now, and have finally managed to progress a new and integrated IT system to improve the way services are offered.

The process of booking a class or a court will be made easier, with the introduction of online booking via the centre's website.

"From go-live date, members will be able to book fitness classes and five-a-side courts; as well as squash, tennis and badminton courts all online," said Mrs Herridge.

From the middle of July, customers will be able to choose a membership to fit in with how they use the centre and two new memberships will also be introduced.

Guernsey's government is welcoming a new plan for the UK's fisheries post-Brexit.

Yesterday, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs released a white paper on the plans which included the intention to develop a new fisheries management agreement with the Bailiwick.

The plans released by DEFRA didn't include a lot of detail on what a new arrangement would mean.

However, Guernsey's government has welcomed the consultation, and said a dialogue has already been struck between officials in the UK and the Bailiwick.

It added it's "pleasing" the document "clearly recognises the autonomy of fisheries management in the Crown Dependencies".

The plan has a 10-week consultation period.

The States of Guernseys say once the future UK-EU relationship is clear, the government will be able to tell the local fishing industry what it will mean for them.
