Jersey's government has approved an improvement plan to tackle "the failings in how Jersey cares for and protects children and young people in the island".
Two weeks ago - on the first anniversary of the release of the Jersey Care Inquiry report - ministers agreed to formulate a new improvement plan, which would "set out the urgent actions to be taken, with clear accountability and timescales for how, when and by whom they will be carried out".
Today, the Council of Ministers approved a plan, as well as the formation of an improvement board, jointly chaired by Chief Minister Senator John Le Fondré and new Children's Minister Senator Sam Mezec.
The plan focuses on five main areas:

People in Sark are being urged to be careful when handling hemlock, after suspected cases of poisoning involving animals in the island.
The hemlock weed looks similar to cow parsley and is very toxic. Sark's Agriculture, Environment, Sea Fisheries and Pilotage Committee has written to island residents urging them to wear protective glove when handling the plant.
Hemlock water dropwort is a very poisonous weed commonly found growing in moist conditions. Its most distinctive feature is its swollen white roots often referred to as "dead man's fingers".
The roots are extremely poisonous and are often eaten by livestock with fatal consequences. The best method for controlling the weed is by cutting the stems before the plant flowers.

A new director of civil aviation has been appointed for Jersey and Guernsey.
Dominic Lazarus will have responsibility for all Channel Islands' airspace. The role is jointly funded by both islands.
He is responsible for the regulation of aviation safety and security as well as the regulation of meteorological services for air navigation.
Jersey’s External Relations Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, said: "I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Dominic Lazarus, who will bring valuable experience to the office."

Almost all companies responding to a survey on business activity reported the cost of doing business had gone up over the past three months.
The Business Tendency Survey, external produced by the States of Jersey found companies are planning to take on more staff in the coming months and profitability is neutral, after rising from a negative position three months ago.
Nearly all companies that took part reported increases in costs - that's staff wages and salaries, and the price paid for supplies and purchases.
While more than half of the companies responding reported increased costs, only a third said they'd put their prices up.

Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal was welcomed to Guernsey by a crowd of people at Torteval Church.
She inspected the recent restoration work done on the church on the Bicentenary and unveiled a plaque and planted a tree.
Princess Anne was then introduced to different aspects of Guernsey life in a field in the heart of Torteval, a short walk from the church.
She spoke to a number of people about parish life, local livestock and various military groups and associations.
Graham Edwards, standard Bearer for the Royal Logistic Corps said: "She's fantastic. We've seen her on television and she always seems like a super lady and she proved every bit of that today, wonderful."
The princess went on to Sark to inspect the lighthouse and onto Les Casquets off Alderney.

Nearly 800 people have responded to a consultation on sport and physical activity in Guernsey, the commissioning committee has revealed.
The consultation, which had feedback from 22 sports clubs and association, closes on Sunday and the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture hopes to hear from as many people as possible.
The committee says it wants to hear from people involved in sport and activity but also from those who aren't on what more can be done to use sport to help improve lives.
The responses will help form part of the new strategy for Guernsey sport.

Having more political members on the board that overseas Aurigny and Guernsey government owned utilities would stop the board from attracting high-calibre candidates, according to the Policy and Resources Committee.
Politicians are debating Trading Supervisory Board following a proposal to increase the number of States members on the board and allowing nominations from States members for the president of the committee.
The Policy and Resources Committee says it agrees that nominations should come from the floor for the presidency of the committee but is opposed to increasing the number of politicians on the board from two to five.

A Jersey dairy farmer says he might have to start importing food from the UK for his herd, unless it starts to rain soon.
Andrew Le Gallais says the costs of producing milk are mounting due to the recent hot weather.
He says the wet weather earlier in the year meant grass didn't grow as much as usual and now the hot weather has caused further issues.

Jersey is officially in an "absolute drought" after 15 days without significant rainfall, according to the Jersey Met Office.
The last rainfall of note was on 2 July when 2.8mm of rain was recorded by the island forecaster.
Jersey Water says it has enough water in the reservoirs for three months and there is unlikely to be a hosepipe ban, but has issued some guidelines for reducing water wastage.

The family of a French fisherman who was killed after the Condor Vitesse crashed into his boat seven years ago is still waiting to hear what their compensation will be.
French courts have still not ruled on the final amount of compensation his widow and children will get.

Two baby red squirrels suffering from dehydration are being cared for by experts in Jersey.

They were found covered in fleas and are thought to be two or three weeks old.
