  6. 'Entitled' housing status in public sector 'dangerous'published at 15:08 British Summer Time 16 August 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

Granting special housing status to some public sector workers and not others places a dangerous "premium" on some employees over others, a Jersey politician has said.

Deputy Jess Perchard wants to change the law that allows States workers to be offered housing qualifications as part of their job, if they bring social or economic benefits to Jersey.

She is also calling for the States to examine what entitles someone to be given residency based on their wealth, and says specific phrases in the law need to have clear definitions.

When the head of Jersey's civil service, Charlie Parker, got his job he was given entitled Status "in the interest of the community", which caused outcry from some politicians.

Deputy Perchard, who has put the matter forward for debate, says this rule was aimed at encouraging high value residents to the island and was not intended to be for civil servants.

  8. Mystery ring found on Jersey beachpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 16 August 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

A metal detectorist is puzzled about where a large silver ring, believed to be more than 100 years old, came from after it was found on a Jersey beach.

Richard Miles was searching for another piece of jewellery for a friend on the north end of St Ouen's beach when he made the discovery.

He said the "pleasing" find was rusted with "extreme corrosion" and even after cleaning it the hallmarks are still hard to identify.

The initials GMW or GWR are engraved on the ring and Mr Miles said "it may be possible for somebody out there to work out whose initials they are".

He said: "These objects, although we find them never truly belong to us, they really belong to the people that lost them, and it would be lovely to return it to its rightful owners."

    Quote Message

It's a large gentleman's signet ring I guess, it weighs in at 19 grams and is solid silver. When it was cleaned up you could see there was a hallmark inside but because this thing has been in a salt water environment for so long it's quite difficult to distinguish what the hallmarks are. You normally get the city mark, you get a silver mark and you also get a date letter. Now unfortunately although it looks like it may be London you can't actually make out the year."
