  1. New St Helier development 'won't have parking'published at 09:18 British Summer Time 28 August 2018

    BBC Radio Jersey

Offices above a restaurant in Jersey could soon be turned into three one-bedroom flats.

A company called LL Properties wants to create the homes above Mano's Restaurant, in the corner of West's Centre, St Helier.

The planning application states that the people currently renting the offices want to leave, and it's "unlikely" replacement tenants will be found.

The application says the flats are "very spacious" for one-bedroom homes, but they will not have any parking.

Last month, the constable of St Helier told another developer - Dandara - to think again, after it submitted plans for 52 flats at West's Centre without parking.

Simon Crowcroft said the area already has a shortage of spaces for cars - and along with the roads committee, he asked the company to come up with something more user friendly.

  9. Channel Islands 'should work closer' on waste disposalpublished at 07:39 British Summer Time 28 August 2018

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

A Jersey politician has said he doubts whether Guernsey's plan to ship its waste to Sweden is the most energy efficient method.

While choosing to ship all of the island's black bag waste to Sweden with Geminor, the States of Guernsey claimed it was the cheapest and most environmentally friendly, due to the way Nordic facility captures heat from the process as well as electricity, and uses it to heat homes and businesses.

    Kevin Lewis

But Jersey's Infrastructure Minister, Kevin Lewis, questions that environmental claim.

He said he wonders how much energy is used to transport the waste hundreds of miles to Sweden.

Deputy Lewis said he believes the islands should be "working closer together", especially with the "uncertainty" surrounding Brexit.

  10. States sign waste contractpublished at 07:25 British Summer Time 28 August 2018

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

The States of Guernsey say they chose the cheapest and most environmentally friendly bid to export the island's waste.

A contract has now been been signed with a company called Geminor to take all of Guernsey's black bag waste from October, but it's unclear how much the deal is costing the government.

Geminor UK will ship between 20,000 and 25,000 tonnes of processed waste to Sweden every year.

    Mont Cuet

With the local landfill site Mont Cuet nearing capacity, the States said Geminor's proposal was the cheapest and, despite the longer travel distance, it also scored highest on the environmental assessment.

The explanation given is that the Jonkoping plant is larger than the one in Jersey and more energy efficient.

Although both produce electricity, the Swedish facility apparently captures heat from the process as well, and uses it to provide heating for local homes and businesses.
