Israel has subjected Gaza to its heaviest bombardment yet, striking with ground and naval forces as well as from the air.

The Israeli army said the overnight operation was designed to destroy a network of tunnels used by Palestinian militants.

A BBC reporter in Gaza said there was heavy shelling involving gunboats, fighter jets and helicopters. The night sky over Gaza City was lit up by the explosions.

Fears of an Israeli incursion caused Palestinian families living near the border to flee. This came after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted that it was "attacking in the Gaza Strip", but a military spokesman later said no troops entered Gaza.

Meanwhile Hamas fired three more volleys amounting to about 55 rockets in total into Israel on Thursday evening.

More than 100 people have been killed in Gaza and seven in Israel since fighting began on Monday.

The worsening conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is causing considerable embarrassment for those Arab governments that recently normalised relations with Israel.

The much-trumpeted Abraham Accords - that saw the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan all sign agreements with Israel - were always going to be hostage to events on the ground. Now those events have descended into deadly violence, any further public warming of relations between the Arab states and Israel has been put on hold.

The Abraham Accords, concluded with such fanfare in the final months of the Trump administration, saw several Arab countries not only formalise their relations with Israel but also embark on unprecedented cooperation with it, across a wide range of sectors including security and intelligence. Within weeks of the signings in Washington, the head of Israel's external intelligence agency, Mossad, was given a VIP welcome in the Gulf - something unthinkable even a year ago.

Yet today governments of the signatory nations, notably the UAE and Bahrain, find themselves in a deeply uncomfortable position.

  7. Biden's Israel comments could split Democratspublished at 21:20 British Summer Time 13 May 2021

Joe Biden’s comment that he has not seen a “significant overreaction” by Israel in its response to rocket attacks from Gaza and Lebanon won’t sit well with the portions of his Democratic base who view Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s military actions as excessive.

On Wednesday night Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib told BBC Newsnight that the US should threaten to cut off military support to Israel if it doesn’t rein in its military.

Biden’s comments move US policy in the opposite direction - and will be seen as acceptance, if not approval, of Israel’s current military posture.

The political consequences for Biden could be significant. Up until now, Biden has been able to count on the backing of left-wing progressives in his coalition as he pursues his political priorities.

They may have wanted a more ambitious effort on immigration reform or increasing the minimum wage, for example, but they have – sometimes grudgingly – continued to rally to his side.

If they feel Biden is turning his back on what they view as gross human rights abuses, they could start to push back. With a narrow Democratic majority in Congress, any Democratic defections or dissent could thoroughly derail Biden’s legislative agenda.

Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel demonstrations prompted by the escalating hostilities have taken place in several countries, including Belgium, Iran, Italy, Kenya, Pakistan, Turkey, the US and the UK.

The president described the situation as a "work in progress" and said the US had spoken with leaders including Mr Netanyahu.
