  1. Israeli destruction hampering civilian aid - Palestinian Red Crescentpublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 4 July 2023

Humanitarian relief teams face huge difficulties in accessing the Jenin camp to help civilians as a result of Israeli roadblocks and infrastructure destruction, the Palestinian Red Crescent has said.

Nebal Farksak says it's really difficult to move inside the streets of the camp, on top of areas where teams have been denied access by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops.

"It's really hard for our ambulances to work inside the camp, some of them have become stuck because of the destruction," she tells BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

She says they are doing their best to assist civilians who have been trying to escape the violence in Jenin, who faced a "really tough night" with power cuts and extensive blockades.

Israeli forces say they have found and "neutralised" an underground shaft inside Jenin refugee camp that was being used to store explosive devices.

Overnight, troops also dismantled "two operational situation rooms belonging to terrorist organisations in the area", according to a joint statement from the Israel Defense Forces, Israel Border Police and Shin Bet security agency. They did not identify the groups.

Rear Adm Daniel Hagari says 120 suspects have been detained so far, with 300 armed militants believed to be in Jenin in hiding still.

He adds the targets are likely to include "sites that include explosive labs".

Some of the evacuated families came to our hotel last night.

They didn’t want to be recorded, but one woman who had left Jenin camp told the BBC: “I am worried about my husband; while we were leaving the camp, the [Israeli] army stopped us and took my husband and let me with the kids leave the camp.”

I am now looking out from a balcony and it is very quiet, very peaceful, no clashes and no movement of people and cars in the street.

You can hear the sound of an Israeli drone flying above.

  8. 3,000 evacuated from Jenin camp - Palestinian Red Crescentpublished at 06:21 British Summer Time 4 July 2023

An official from the Palestinian Red Crescent says its crews evacuated 3,000 people - including patients and the elderly - from Jenin refugee camp to local hospitals overnight.

Ahmed Jibril says Israeli forces have detained dozens of people since early Monday "inside narrow rooms in their homes, without providing or allowing any food or drink".

He adds the work of Palestinian Red Crescent crews have been hampered because of the "great damage to roads and infrastructure inside the camp".

The deadline for people to leave the camp was midnight last night (21:00 GMT).

A general strike has been called in the Palestinian Authority areas across the occupied West Bank in response to the ongoing military operation in Jenin.

Shops and offices are closed, while schools and universities are already off for summer.

However, large numbers of Palestinian workers are still entering Jerusalem through the main Israeli checkpoints from the West Bank this morning.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the major Israeli military operation in Jenin refugee camp, in the north of the occupied West Bank.

Nine Palestinians have been killed and 100 injured since Israeli forces launched the operation in the early hours of Monday, Palestinian health officials say. Some 3,000 people are reported to have fled the densely populated camp overnight.

Hundreds of troops, supported by drone strikes and armoured bulldozers, are taking part in what the Israeli military has described as "an extensive counter-terrorism effort". Palestinian leaders have condemned it as an "invasion" and a "new war crime".

  13. Hundreds protest in West Bank - Palestinian news agencypublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

The official news agency for the Palestinian National Authority (Wafa) reported that Palestinians marched across the occupied West Bank to protest the Israeli operation in Jenin, including in the villages of Nabi Saleh and Aboud northwest of Ramallah, Bethlehem, and at the Qalandia military checkpoint north of Jerusalem.

Other agencies reported protests in Gaza.

Some of the marches were dispersed by Israeli forces, according to Wafa.

These reports have not been independently verified by the BBC.

    Yolande Knell
    Reporting from Jenin

At the Palestinian hospital by the main entrance to the Jenin refugee camp, the mood is grim.

It is close to the intense gun battles that are still taking place but a few residents have been able to visit their injured relatives.

One man told the BBC there was "a massacre" in the camp.

He said there were children and civilians in the camp but "they’re not letting them out".

"Our electricity is cut, they have dug up all our roads. The camp will be destroyed," he added.

  15. UN agency: Many in Jenin camp urgently need food and waterpublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

The UN's Palestinian refugee agency, Unrwa, says it is "deeply concerned" about the impact of the Israeli operation in Jenin refugee camp.

In a statement, external, it says water and electricity services have been interrupted in large areas of the camp, leaving residents "unable to move from their homes".

"Many are in urgent need of food, drinking water and milk powder for children," Unrwa says.

Unrwa says its 10 installations in the camp - including four schools and one health centre - had been left unable to operate due to "heavy exchange of fire", and "urgent action is required to ensure those injured have access to medical care".

The UN agency calls on "all parties" to "break this cycle of increasing violence", the statement adds.

  17. Violence in Jenin a reminder of 2002 battle - BBC Arabic reporterpublished at 18:48 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

Airstrikes in Jenin have continued during the day, says BBC Arabic's Eman Eriqat, and she has been able to hear drones flying above the city.

She says the airstrikes and gun battles are reminding Palestinians of the "bad days" they lived through during the Israeli military operation 20 years ago - referring to what's called the Battle of Jenin, which took place in 2002, during the Second Intifada.

More than 50 Palestinians and 23 Israeli soldiers were killed in more than a week of fighting in Jenin. It followed a campaign of Palestinian attacks in Israel and the occupied West Bank, many of which involved perpetrators from the city.

Eriqat says Palestinian medical teams have called for a halt in the violence so they can evacuate the injured from the refugee camp to hospitals.

The Palestinian leadership is scheduled to meet later tonight to decide how to respond to Israel’s operation, she reports.

  18. Acrid smoke hangs in the air over Jeninpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Yolande Knell
    BBC Middle East correspondent, Jenin

As night falls, acrid smoke from the burning tyres lit during today's protests hangs in the air over Jenin.

Only a few Palestinian young men and teenagers are out on the streets, standing close to the shuttered shops, and they stare nervously in the direction of the city's large refugee camp.

As the call to prayer sounded out from a mosque near the hotel where we are staying, there were several jolting loud thuds of explosions.

Jenin has seen many deadly Israeli military raids in recent months but this is the most wide-scale and already the most long-lasting in many years.

  19. Who are the so-called Jenin Brigades?published at 18:16 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Paul Adams
    Diplomatic correspondent

The Jenin Brigades are a collection of mostly young fighters, loosely affiliated with militant groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Crucially, they have almost complete disdain for the Palestinian Authority and its leader, the eighty seven year old Mahmoud Abbas. Most have never known any kind of meaningful peace process and they blame the traditional leadership for doing nothing to prevent Israel’s gradual colonisation of the West Bank.

For them, the battle against occupation is all that matters. And that includes attacking Jewish settlers living in their midst.

Hardline members of Israel’s right-wing government have been pushing for the army to take robust action for months, apparently against the better instincts of some within the Israeli military, who fear that it could further inflame an already volatile situation.

Large scale raids on militant groups have been carried out before, in Jenin and elsewhere. They do little to address the underlying problems and generally serve as a trigger for further violence.

Jenin in the West Bank: Guns and grief on the rise

Want to understand a bit more about what's going on?

In this video, made a year ago, our Middle East correspondent Tom Bateman filmed in Jenin refugee camp - where Israel's military operation today is taking place.

Even then, Israel's military had been carrying out arrest raids in the occupied West Bank - following a wave of deadly attacks by Palestinians against Israelis earlier that year. The focus was on Jenin refugee camp, home to several militant groups and where attackers had come from.

He saw how armed groups controlled the area and heard how civilians had been caught in the crossfire.
