Gaza catastrophe deepening as truce fails to materialisepublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

    Tom Bateman
    Reporting from Jerusalem

In Gaza, thousands of Palestinians who hold foreign passports have massed close to the border with Egypt amid reports that the crossing could open to let people out and aid trucks in.

But a hoped-for humanitarian truce has failed to materialise, meaning Gaza’s catastrophe is deepening.

Water is running out and there are huge queues at bakeries where bread is rationed to five pieces per family. Hospitals are close to a complete collapse of services, threatening thousands of lives, says the UN.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military says it now knows the identities of 199 people - including children and the elderly - who were taken hostage by Hamas in Gaza. It says their families have been informed but there is growing anger and frustration among some at lack of any progress over their fate.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is back in Jerusalem after a three-day round of diplomacy, trying to prevent the crisis engulfing the region.

    Nathanel Young

UK PM Rishi Sunak has just said six British people were killed in the Hamas attacks on Israel. Nathanel Young, a British man serving in the Israeli army, was among those killed by Hamas gunmen on 7 October.

Today, in his first interview with news outlets, his brother Eliot said: “My brother just wanted to keep his people safe.”

At the funeral last Monday, air raid sirens interrupted the ceremony as mourners had to lie on the floor, shielding from any incoming Hamas rockets.

“It was terrifying - especially for my parents who had just arrived from London. It was very traumatic for them.

"What went through my head - even while I’m trying to say goodbye to my brother - was, 'they are trying to kill me'.”

He described his younger brother as someone who loved music; his nickname was DJ. “He just loved life," said Eliot.

"We are all devastated…The last time I saw him was exactly a week before he was killed by the Hamas terrorists. If I look back at that day I remember his infectious smile. We always gave each other a huge hug. I will miss that smile, that hug and those laughs we had together.”

  12. Starmer: Must not forget the history Jewish people carry with thempublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

Starmer notes devastating stories from across the UK and says he spoke with the First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf whose in-laws are trapped in Gaza with no prospect of safe passage to another country.

The Labour leader says there has been a "worrying rise" of islamophobia and antisemitic behaviour.

Starmer says we must not forget or underestimate the burden of history Jewish people carry with them.

He insists Westminster and Britain are "united".

"Our values cannot be compromised," he says and finishes: "Terror cannot win."

  13. 'The goal of Hamas is not peace, but to see Israel "wiped off the map"'published at 15:51 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

Leader of the opposition Sir Keir Starmer is up now.

He joins Sunak in condemning the "senseless murder of men, women, children, the horrors of hostage taking, music festivals turned to killing fields, an attack with no cause than bloodshed."

"As in any time of grave crisis it is crucial this House speaks with one voice of condemnation of terror and in support of Israel in its time of agony and for the dignity of all human life," Starmer says.

He says the goal of Hamas is not peace, but to see Israel "wiped off the map".

"But Hamas are not the Palestinian people and the Palestinian people are not Hamas."

Starmer says Israel has the right to defend itself, and the world must continue to strive to a two-state solution for a Palestinian state and a safe a secure Israel.

"We cannot give up on that hope," he says.

The Prime Minister insists the UK will do all it can to keep stability in the region and will aim to do so by "using all the tools of diplomacy".

  15. Sunak: We support Israel's right to defend itselfpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

Sunak continues by asking how the UK should respond.

"We support Israel's right to defend itself and deter further incursions," he tells the House of Commons.

But, the PM insists this must be done in line with international humanitarian law.

"As a friend we will continue to call on Israel to take every possible precaution to avoid harming civilians," Sunak says.

Forces are being bolstered in Cyprus in the region and increasing a presence to prevent broader instability in the area.

Sunak tells the House he is increasing aid for Palestinian civilians by a third, with a £10m boost to existing funds.

  16. 'Atrocity an existential strike at the very idea of Israel as a safe homeland'published at 15:43 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

"We stand with you now and always," he says to a chorus of "hear hear".

"This atrocity was an existential strike at the very idea of Israel as a safe homeland."

Sunak says his government is "doing everything we can" to protect the community.

He adds that £3 million has been put to protecting Jewish community buildings and police will "ensure hate crimes and glorification of terror will be met with full force of the law".

He then turns to British Muslim communities "who are appalled by Hamas".

We must listen to their concerns with the same attentiveness, Sunak says.

"Let's say it plainly. We stand with British Muslim communities too," he says.

    "Hear hear," the House echoes.

  20. White House still hoping Rafah crossing could open today - reportpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

Earlier today we covered reports that Rafah crossing on the Egypt-Gaza border might open for a few hours to let aid in and some people out of the territory.

Hamas, Egypt, and Israel all exercise control over who can pass through.

It came after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Rafah crossing into Egypt "will reopen".

Israel and Hamas both denied that a truce was taking place today to allow the movement of aid and some foreign nationals.

However, we are now seeing a report that White House officials are still hoping it could open for a few hours later.

"We're hoping, hoping, that sometime later today, it can be open for a period of hours. But again, we just have to kind of wait and see how this goes," Reuters news agency says White House spokesperson John Kirby told CNN.

"We're going to keep working at this very, very hard."
