At the Mount Herzl Military Cemetery in Jerusalem, a funeral is being held for Israeli soldier Lavi Lipshitz, 20, who was killed in ground fighting in the northern Gaza Strip yesterday.

  3. What happened in Jabalia yesterday?published at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2023

We’ve been reporting on an Israeli air strike that hit a refugee camp in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza yesterday afternoon.

It was not the only IDF attack in Jabalia on Tuesday – so here’s what we know.

    Strike in the camp

A large explosion rocked the Jabalia camp yesterday afternoon. Pictures taken at the scene by news agencies in the immediate aftermath showed several large craters surrounded by destroyed buildings. Children could be seen among the dead and injured, as people searched through the rubble for survivors.

BBC Verify geolocated the blast site to an area located within the refugee camp, which is made up of many residential buildings and was home to 116,000 people before the war.

The Israel Defense Forces later confirmed a strike, saying it had killed a senior Hamas commander, Ibrahim Biari, and targeted “underground terror infrastructure” beneath buildings that collapsed.

It said a “large number of terrorists were killed” and accused Hamas of intentionally using civilians as human shields. Hamas denied any commander had been there.

AFP news agency said their footage from the scene showed at least 47 bodies pulled from the rubble. A senior doctor at the nearby Indonesian Hospital told the BBC it received 120 dead, the majority women and children.

The BBC can’t independently confirm casualty figures. The IDF said it was looking into "reports of collateral damage and non-combatant casualties".

    Western Jabalia

The IDF also said on Tuesday its ground forces killed about 50 Hamas fighters during an operation to secure a military stronghold in western Jabalia that served as a training centre for the 7 October attack on Israel. It said it destroyed entrances to terror tunnels and a large stock of weapons, and released a map of what it described as a “Hamas military compound”.

Two Israeli soldiers were killed, the IDF said. Hamas’s military wing said it had fired at tanks and bulldozers in north-west Gaza.

BBC Verify has geolocated this site to an area more than 2km north-west from the area of the refugee camp that was hit.

Map shows location of air strike within boundary of refugee camp in Jabalia. It also shows a separate area targeted by Israeli forces outside the camp boundary, more than 2km north-west. Map title reads: Israeli attacks on Jabalia on 31 OctoberImage source, .

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says in a post on social media: "We have been working with Egypt's Health Ministry on planning for medical evacuations, and will continue to support."

He adds: "We need an immediate acceleration in the flow of medical aid permitted into Gaza. Hospitals must be protected from bombardment and military use."

I am at the Rafah border crossing, where around 500 people are waiting to cross into Egypt.

I have spoken to five passport control officers on the Palestinian side, who say they will first process about 88 people with serious injuries - and then start on dual nationals.

We understand from the authorities here there are about 7,000 people registered as dual nationals in Gaza.

Five-hundred people per day will be allowed to cross to the Egyptian side of the border.

As of now, we haven't seen any Hamas-run police officers controlling the area.

Once the Egyptians approve of all people on the Palestinian side, they will be allowed to cross to the other side of the border.

This is very significant development, given the the crossing has been totally closed since the beginning of this war.

A list of hundreds of names has been published by the General Authority for Crossings and Borders in Gaza, showing the foreign nationals who should be allowed to leave through the Rafah crossing today.

The list is mostly of Jordanians, but other nationalities include Austrians, Japanese, Bulgarians, Indonesians, and Australians.

There are two British people on the list, included in a separate section for NGO workers.

The list says the foreign nationals had to arrive at 07:00 local time in the outdoor hall of the crossing.

We're stilling seeing crowds of people queuing at the terminal border, with no confirmation that anyone has reached the Egyptian side.

We've been focusing on the Rafah crossing in the southern Gaza Strip this morning - but we've just heard new comments from Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He was speaking after Israel confirmed 11 soldiers died in fighting in Gaza on Tuesday.

"We are in a difficult war. It will be a long war. We have important achievements in it, but also painful losses," he says.

"We know - each of our soldiers is a whole world.

"The entire nation of Israel embraces you, the families, from the bottom of our hearts. We are all with you in your time of great sorrow.

"Our soldiers fell in a just war, a war for our home. I promise you citizens of Israel: we will continue until we fulfill the mission - we will continue until victory."

We're seeing the first images of the Egyptian field hospital built in Sheikh Zuweid near the Rafah border crossing in Egypt.

Ambulances entered Gaza from Egypt earlier and as we've reported, they were seen driving back up to the border a short time ago.

Meanwhile the AFP news agency says 545 foreigners - including dual nationals - will be allowed into Egypt.

Hundreds of people with kids and families have their bags, sitting on the ground, outside the border terminal in Rafah - but nobody has called them yet.

We understand something might happen soon - we might see people allowed to cross.

I haven't seen any ambulances or injured people crossing into Egypt, but they may have a different arrangement for people who are going to be transported for medical treatment.

We understand from local authorities about 88 injured people will be allowed into the Egyptian side.

We believe Egypt is building a field hospital about 10km from the border.
