  1. No Al-Shifa footage - but images from yesterday show covered bodies in courtyardpublished at 13:22 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

Warning: Some people might find the image in this post upsetting

Earlier, we brought you comments from a surgeon at Al-Shifa hospital, in northern Gaza. He spoke of efforts to dig a mass grave at the hospital yesterday, and warned that "we don't want to have any outbreaks due to these dead bodies, who are outside the main refrigerator".

We have not yet been able to verify any images or videos from Al-Shifa taken today.

However, pictures and videos taken yesterday just outside the hospital appear to demonstrate that rows of bodies were lined up there.

Below, we have taken a screenshot from one of these videos, which we have verified.

Other photos from yesterday show bodies beneath some of these same blankets.

  2. Dozens of babies at risk in Al-Shifa hospitalpublished at 13:04 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

Back to Gaza itself now - where Palestinian health officials have said the lives of dozens of babies are at risk in Al-Shifa hospital after fuel ran out and caused operations to be halted.

Earlier, a surgeon inside the hospital told the BBC that water, fuel and electricity had all run out, and people were trapped inside due to constant bombardment. Israel has claimed, external its enemy Hamas is using the hospital for its military purposes - something Hamas denies.

The exact number of babies at risk in the neo-natal unit is unclear. The Gazan health ministry, run by Hamas, reports 45. Meanwhile, the Palestinian health ministry in the separate West Bank ministry says it's 39.

What seems clear is that there are dozens of newborns requiring urgent care that is currently impossible.

  3. Counter-protesters arrested on day of London pro-Palestinian marchpublished at 12:57 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

London's Metropolitan Police is facing a challenging situation as a large pro-Palestinian demonstration coincides with Armistice Day.

Our reporter Thomas Mackintosh says the pro-Palestinian march has got under way near Hyde Park peacefully.

But elsewhere in the city centre, the Met Police say they've detained “a large group of counter-protesters” believed to have been involved in disorder.

The Met has vowed to track potential troublemakers and “use all the powers and tactics available to us” to prevent any disruption to the pro-Palestinian demo.

Underneath the sound of a police helicopter and the echo of chants from megaphones, London's pro-Palestinian march gets under way.

At the front, I can see many groups who are taking part - including Stop the War Coalition, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Muslim Association of Britain and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Police have closed off one lane of Park Lane allowing protesters to slowly filter down towards Wellington Arch. They are chanting “ceasefire now”.

Poignantly, I’ve noticed several protesters wearing a poppy while also carrying a Palestine flag. Former leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn and his close ally John McDonnell are at the front.

  5. In pictures: Israeli assault on Gaza continuespublished at 12:29 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

Much of our recent reporting has focused on Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital. But these images which have reached us give an insight into the situation in the wider Gaza Strip today.

In case you're just joining us, here are the main developments of the day so far.

    At Al-Shifa hospital:

    • A surgeon at Gaza's biggest hospital has told the BBC that the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) has been struck and is damaged. Two patients who were on ventilators have now died, one of whom was a baby, he says
    • The hospital is out of fuel, food, and water, the surgeon said - adding that there is constant shooting and bombardment around the hospital
    • He also said people trying to leave the hospital had been shot at, and some had died
    • We cannot verify what caused any damage to the hospital. Hamas yesterday blamed Israel for an alleged strike on the hospital - but Israel says it does not target hospitals, and blamed a "misfired projectile launched by terrorist organizations inside the Gaza Strip"
    • When asked about the surgeon's claims this morning about the ICU and about shooting near the hospital, the IDF said it couldn't confirm "specific military activity currently under way", but acknowledged "ongoing intense fighting against Hamas in the vicinity of the area in question"

    In other news:

    • Arab and Muslim leaders are gathering in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
    • It's expected the leaders will spend the day working towards a unified statement to call for an end to the war
    • In London, huge crowds of protesters are expected to take part in a march to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. The large Pro-Palestinian demonstration coincides with Armistice Day

Protesters wearing high-vis jackets and holding placard gather in central London

Crowds are building up along Park Lane outside Hyde Park - for today's planned pro-Palestinian march in London.

There's a heavy police presence. I’ve spotted officers from Wales, Dorset and Cheshire - who have all been drafted in to help the Met Police.

Protesters have started chanting calling for a ceasefire as Palestinian flags wave in the air.

Banners are being handed out. Everything so far is peaceful as the crowd slowly walks down towards Hyde Park Corner.

  8. WFP Gaza food schemes collapsepublished at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

    Joel Gunter
    Reporting from Jerusalem

Every shop that was providing food to Gazans under a World Food Programme assistance scheme ran out of basic supplies on Friday, the WFP has told me.

The voucher scheme had previously allowed 500,000 Gazans to purchase food staples, and the WFP was surveying the shops daily to see if they were still functioning.

On Friday, 100% of those stores reported that they were no longer able to offer food on the scheme, said Alia Zaki, a WFP spokeswoman.

“Gaza’s food production and distribution systems have collapsed,” Zaki said.

The WFP was also working with 23 bakeries, subsidising fresh daily bread for refugees. But Zaki said none of those bakeries would be operational the next day - today.

“People are queuing for five to six hours for bread and coming back empty handed.”

  9. Red Cross says Al-Shifa 'cannot continue like this'published at 11:43 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

"The information coming from the Al-Shifa hospital is distressing," says the regional director of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the Near and Middle East.

"It cannot continue like this," Fabrizio Carboni adds.

Posting to X (formerly Twitter), external, Carboni calls for the protection of wounded and displaced civilians and medical staff "in line with the laws of war."

Al-Shifa is reported to be under constant bombardment, with the power out. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) hasn't commented - other than to acknowledge "intense fighting against Hamas" in the area.

  10. Israeli military says fighting paused for four hours around Jabaliapublished at 11:31 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

The Israeli military has confirmed that the main road through Gaza has been opened for evacuations today, until 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT).

It also says there is a "tactical pause" under way until 14:00 local time in the the area of the Jabalia refugee camp to encourage civilians to move south via the Salah al-Din road.

  11. London march organiser says protesters don't want to be near Cenotaphpublished at 11:19 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

One of the organisers of today's pro-Palestinian march in London has suggested that comments made by UK politicians beforehand could serve to increase the protest's attendance.

Ben Jamal, who is the director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), told BBC Radio 4's Today programme earlier that people would get involved as "they want to protect that right" to protest.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman caused a furore earlier this week by saying aggressive right-wing protesters were treated differently by police to "pro-Palestinian mobs" - comments that were disowned by Downing Street.

An exclusion zone is in place around the Cenotaph and a large swathe of Whitehall today, which London police say will "in effect" ban pro-Palestinian protesters from these locations.

Jamal says organisers had already told police "we did not want to be anywhere near Whitehall" or disrupt preparations for the commemoration of remembrance on Sunday.

  12. Israeli military acknowledges 'ongoing intense fighting' near Al-Shifapublished at 10:42 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

We asked the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for comment on the reported military activity at Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital - including claims the intensive care unit has been hit and that civilians have been shot when trying to leave.

The IDF said it couldn't confirm "specific military activity currently under way", but acknowledged "ongoing intense fighting against Hamas in the vicinity of the area in question". Here's the full statement.

    Quote Message

The IDF is in the midst of a war against Hamas throughout the entire Gaza Strip, and is currently engaged in intense battle against Hamas in the northern part of the Strip.

    Quote Message

Hamas, whose absolute disrespect of international law was evident in its brutal murderous assault against women, children, elderly and the disabled, and its abduction of civilians on 7 October, continues to violate the law by embedding itself and its military assets within the Gazan population, and within civilian and humanitarian structures.

    Quote Message

The IDF is in the midst of ongoing intense fighting against Hamas in the vicinity of the area in question. Unlike Hamas, the IDF adheres to the law by taking all feasible measures under operational circumstances to mitigate harm to civilians.

  14. Hamas minister reports 'ferocious' gunfire outside hospitalpublished at 10:32 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

The deputy minister of the Hamas-run health ministry Dr Youssef Abu Alreesh says he's inside the Al-Shifa hospital, from where he's given an account to Al Jazeera, external of what's been going on.

He said "ferocious" gunfire could be heard outside, and parts of the hospital including the intensive care unit have been strucl. The doctor said he feared fire would engulf the building with them all inside it.

"A few families tried to leave but they were targeted; now they are lying dead outside the hospital," he said. We heard the same from a surgeon who messaged our correspondent Jeremy Bowen this morning.

"No one is able to move around the compound, snipers are stationed all over the place in addition to the drones that target and kill any moving person," Dr Abu Alreesh said.

"This is the moment we have been warning the whole world of."

  15. Medics says attempts to dig hospital mass grave were thwartedpublished at 10:12 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

Surgeon Marwan Abu Saada continues in his voice notes to the BBC by saying attempts were made yesterday to dig a mass grave at Al-Shifa hospital. But he says efforts were thwarted by Israeli attacks.

Saada explains that "we don't want to have any outbreaks due to these dead bodies, who are outside the main refrigerator".

That refrigerator is "not working because we don't have fuel to run this generator", he adds.

A reminder that the Israeli military says it doesn't attack hospitals - and we've approached it this morning for its latest comment.

  16. Surgeon says people shot outside hospitalpublished at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

More from those voice notes from a surgeon at Al-Shifa hospital.

"The people who tried this morning to evacuate from the hospital, they have been shot in the streets," Marwan Abu Saada says.

He says an engineering team went to check on the generators powering the ICU and neonatal unit, but were also shot at, leaving one member of the team paralysed.

The BBC hasn't been able to verify this, and it's not clear who fired the shots. We've approached the Israeli military for comment.

  17. Al-Shifa surgeon says intensive care unit was hitpublished at 09:33 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2023

In the last hour, our international editor Jeremy Bowen - who's currently in Israel - has received a voice note from Marwan Abu Saada, a surgeon currently inside Al-Shifa hospital.

Saada says the main intensive care unit (ICU) has been hit, and sounds of shooting and bombardments echo "every second".

He says no-one can get leave the hospital, and no-one can come in.

The doctor adds that there is now no water, food or electricity in the hospital.

Two patients who were on ventilators have now died, one of whom was a baby, Saada says.

As we mentioned below - the Hamas-run health ministry has also reported the death of a newborn.
