Omer told his mum he had got in the car and was trying to escape, and had shared his live location with his family before his phone dropped out.

"Then we saw that Omer was going into Gaza. We didn’t want to believe it, my husband went to hospitals to try and find him. One of his friends called and said there was a video telegram where Omer was on the floor of a pickup truck. That was the last time we saw him.”

Head of Unicef Catherine Russell has been speaking to the Today programme on Radio 4 this morning about her trip to Gaza last week.

"The scale and pace of the death and injury has been most shocking”, she says. "One death of a child is too many.”

Russell goes on to say: “We are going to have to make it [Gaza] liveable again” - adding that it is important not to lose sight of the children who were abducted from Israel by Hamas on 7 October.

"The abduction of children is against international humanitarian law and these children need to be released immediately," Russell says, “and I can't say we have had much progress but I am hopeful at some point these children will be released and be able to return to their families."

A short time ago, the director of the hospital, Dr Marwan Al-Sultan told the BBC the Israeli army was about 20 metres from the building.

Earlier he said he had heard gunfire all around and that the department for post-operative care had been hit.

The latest statement from the Israeli military did not refer to action near the hospital.

It said that three company commanders of Hamas had been killed.

  15. Babies being evacuated 'a small positive in horrific 48 hours', says Unicef workerpublished at 07:02 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

    Toby Flicker, Unicef

Toby Fricker from Unicef says that the conditions were deteriorating so much at al-Shifa hospital that the 31 premature babies urgently needed to be transferred.

“There were 39 premature babies, sadly some of them had already died”, he says.

The mission was “very dangerous and very difficult to operate,” according to Fricker, who spoke to BBC Breakfast a short while ago.

“It is a very small positive in what has been an horrific 48 hours,” Fricker added.

Fricker says that negotiations are continuing to transfer the babies to a hospital in Egypt, because “There is nowhere fully safe in Gaza and every hospital is under strain.”

Unicef is also trying to identify the parents of the babies or their extended family members Fricker says, “Because we don’t want these children to be completely separated from their families.”

  16. Hope some hostages could be freed in exchange for brief ceasefirepublished at 06:46 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

    Yolande Knell
    Middle East correspondent, in Jerusalem

Even as the brutal fighting continues between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, there are signs that weeks of indirect hostage negotiations, involving the US and Qatar, are finally making progress.

Israel’s ambassador to the US has said there’s hope that a significant number of hostages could be freed in the coming days in exchange for a brief ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army - under pressure to justify its raid of al-Shifa hospital - has released two new videos. One, it says, shows a tunnel leading to a blast proof door of the kind used by Hamas for its command centres.

The other taken from security cameras is said to show two hostages, one wounded, being taken to the hospital on the 7 October. The BBC can’t independently verify the footage.

The army also says a medical report determined that a young Israeli woman soldier whose body was recovered last week had been injured in an air strike and then killed by Hamas in the hospital.

  17. UN human rights commissioner 'appalled by horrendous events'published at 06:21 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

The UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights has issued another video saying he is "appalled by horrendous events of past 48hrs in Gaza".

Volker Turk appeared to be referencing Israel's strikes on the Jabalia refugee camp on Saturday, which also hit a school run by the UN, officials in the area say.

"Killings of so many in schools-turned-shelters, amid fleeing of hundreds from al-Shifa Hospital & ongoing displacement in southern Gaza, wholly inconsistent with protection of civilians required under international law," Mr Turk wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter., external

"How much more violence, bloodshed and misery will it take before people come to their senses?" he says in the accompanying video.

"How many more civilians will be killed? This must stop. Humanity must come first. A ceasfire on humanitarian and human rights grounds is desperately needed. Now."

  18. Several parties say hostage deal 'close'published at 06:05 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

To reiterate what we've reported this weekend - several groups say they are inching closer to a deal on the release of some of the Hamas hostages.

Qatar's PM said efforts to bring back the hostages were now within reach. "I'm now more confident that we are close enough to reach a deal," said Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, adding that only "minor" practical details remained unresolved.

Meanwhile US national security official Jon Finer said negotiators were "closer that we have been perhaps at any point since these negotiations began weeks ago".

However last night, Israel PM's quashed reports of an imminent agreement. "As of now there is no deal," he said.

  20. Japanese ship in Red Sea seized by Yemen's Houthi rebelspublished at 05:13 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

Japan's government has strongly condemned the hijacking of a Japanese-operated cargo ship in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

The Yemeni militia claimed the ship was Israeli, but a Japanese government spokesperson confirmed the vessel was a car carrier operated by Nippon Yusen.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Iran, which backs the Houthi militia, for the hijacking.

Mr Netanyahu said neither the vessel nor the crew were Israeli, and called it an "Iranian attack on an international ship".

The Houthis had earlier threatened to target any Israeli ship within their reach in response to Israel's retaliatory military action in the Gaza Strip following Hamas' 7 October attack.
