As we've been reporting, a temporary ceasefire in Gaza is now in its seventh day - although we're still waiting to hear whether it will be extended again. Talks are currently taking place and we'll bring you more as we have it.

But the seven-day pause in fighting has meant relief for people in Gaza. More aid has been getting in, and people have been moving about the Strip, some returning to their homes to assess damage. Here are some of the latest pictures:

  2. IDF says attack carried out on checkpoint in West Bankpublished at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2023

Away from the attack in Jerusalem for a moment, the Israeli military says one of its checkpoints has been attacked in Moshav Beka'ot in the Jordan Valley area - an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank.

In a statement, the Israel Defence Forces says a "ramming attack" was carried out a short time ago on the checkpoint.

Two of its troops were "lightly injured" in the attack and have been taken to hospital, it said, adding that IDF soldiers "shot and neutralized" the attacker at the scene.

"The forces are searching the area for additional suspects," the IDF says.

Blinken will next head to Ramallah to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas

During this, his fourth visit to Israel since 7 October, Anthony Blinken will certainly be exploring ways of keeping the temporary truce going.

But he’s also here to convey Washington’s thinking on how Israel should behave when – as is still likely – it resumes its military campaign in Gaza.

The message seems clear: there needs to be a change of tactics, to avoid killing thousands more Palestinian civilians.

Quoting an unnamed senior US administration official, the Washington Post says Israel "can’t do what they did in the north in the south".

The warnings come at a critical moment.

Yesterday, Benny Gantz, a member of the war cabinet, warned that fighting could resume "at any given moment."

"The fighting…will expand to wherever it is needed throughout the Strip,” he said. "There will be no cities of refuge."

There are some signs that Israel is listening to the advice from Washington.

Yesterday a senior Israeli official who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity said Israel’s operation in the southern Gaza Strip would be "different".

But he made it clear that it would still be up to Palestinians to make sure they moved to “safe zones” to avoid being targeted by the Israeli Defence Forces.

The attack in Jerusalem this morning, which happened at around 07:30 on a busy road that is one of the entrances to Jerusalem, is another sign of heightened tensions in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories, amid the Israel-Hamas war.

Three people - two women aged 24 and 67, and a 73-year-old man - were killed. Three hours later, the area had already been cleared by the authorities.

CCTV footage showed the moment the car with the two attackers stops by the crowded bus stop. They both get out and open fire at people, who run desperately.

Two off-duty soldiers and one armed civilian responded by shooting at the gunmen.

Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency, has identified the attackers - who were shot dead - as Palestinian brothers Murad Nemer, 38, and Ibrahim, 30. Both were residents of East Jerusalem, and had been separately imprisoned for "terrorist activities". Murad, the agency said, had spent 10 years in prison, between 2010 and 2020.

Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, visited the scene of the shooting and said the gunmen were “Hamas operatives”. The attack, he said, was proof that the government’s policy of arming civilians, introduced after the 7 October Hamas attacks, was right.

“This event proves again how we must not show weakness, that we must speak to Hamas only through the (rifle) scopes, through the war. Against Hamas we must fight," he said, adding that the attack showed the importance of the policy of issuing gun licences to private citizens.

    Wyre Davies
    reporting from Jerusalem

How these incidents in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Jenin will affect the temporary truce which allows for the continued exchange of hostages and prisoners is unclear.

That temporary ceasefire has now been extended for another day, but it feels particularly fragile.

The hard-line national security minister in Israel’s government, Itamar Ben-Gvir, arrived quickly at the scene of this morning’s shooting supporting the arming of Israeli civilians. He has also called for the resumption of Israel’s war in Gaza to defeat Hamas.

  11. Jerusalem attack may demonstrate increasing tensions outside Gazapublished at 09:58 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2023

    Wyre Davies
    reporting from Jerusalem

The incident in Jerusalem this morning, which killed three people and injured several others, perhaps demonstrates how the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is leading to increased tensions in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The two attackers were brothers known to the Israeli security services as Hamas supporters from (Palestinian) East Jerusalem and had both served prison sentences for what Israeli sources described as “terrorist activity”.

Shortly after the incident, Israeli police released pictures showing a large amount of bullets and automatic rifle magazines in the assailants’ car, suggesting they had perhaps planned to go on a wider rampage elsewhere in the city.

It follows a similar incident two weeks ago when five Israelis were wounded and one member of the security services was killed in a shooting attack at a checkpoint between the Palestinian city of Bethlehem and Jerusalem.

This latest attack also comes a day after two Palestinian boys, aged eight and 14 were shot and killed during an Israeli army incursion into the city of Jenin, in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank, where several Palestinians have been killed in clashes with Israeli security forces since 7 October.
