Hamas did not release all women hostages as agreed and attacked Israel with rockets this morning, Netanyahu's office adds.

  5. Hamas says multiple areas have been hit by Israeli airstrikespublished at 06:31 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Hugo Bachega
    Middle East correspondent

As the Israeli military resumed combat operations, it accused Hamas of violating the terms of a temporary truce.

Shortly before the ceasefire was due to expire, sirens sounded in southern Israel, and the Israeli army said it had intercepted a rocket launched from Gaza.

The Hamas-run Interior Ministry said multiple areas had been hit by Israeli airstrikes.

The truce led to the release of more than 100 hostages being held in Gaza – but around 140 remain in captivity.

The restart in hostilities is likely to worsen the humanitarian crisis in the territory, amid shortages of essential supplies.

In the last few minutes, the Israeli military announced an end to the truce with Hamas, blaming it for violating the terms of the deal after a rocket was reportedly launched from Gaza and intercepted by Israel.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who's currently on a visit to the Middle East, said yesterday that Israeli officials had told him they intended to resume military operations at some point.

But in doing so, Blinken urged Israel to do a few things:

    • Put into place “humanitarian civilian protection plans” before going back to war
    • Avoid "further significant displacement of civilians"
    • Avoid damaging critical infrastructure - hospitals, power stations and water facilities
  12. Rockets and gunfire shortly before ceasefire expiredpublished at 05:16 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

Israel's military has now said it has resumed fighting with Hamas in Gaza.

Shortly before the seven-day truce was set to expire, Israel said it shot down a rocket fired from Gaza while media outlets affiliated with the Hamas group reported explosions and gunfire in northern Gaza.

The truce was initially set to last for four days and extended twice.

As of Thursday, 110 hostages held in Gaza have been released since the truce started on 24 November, while Israel has released 240 Palestinian prisoners.

The Hamas attacks on Israel on 7 October killed 1,200 people. Since then, Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry says more than 14,800 people have been killed in Israel's retaliatory campaign, including about 6,000 children.

And AFP quoted eyewitnesses reporting heavy aircraft and drone activity in northwestern Gaza.

Earlier, the israel military said it intercepted a rocket near the border with Gaza.

Now 105 hostages held in Gaza have been released, seven weeks after being taken captive during the 7 October attacks on Israel.

Seventy-eight of them are Israeli women and children - freed as part of a deal between Israel and Hamas.

Three Russian-Israelis, two women and one man, not included in the deal have also been handed over by Hamas.

Twenty-three Thai hostages and one Filipino have been released as part of a separate deal between Hamas and the Egyptian government.

In addition, prior to the deals struck with Hamas, a further four Israeli hostages were released, and another was freed by Israeli forces.

    Image caption,

Antony Blinken (L) held meetings with both the Israeli president and prime minister

The US secretary of state delivered a powerful message to Israel about how to proceed from here.

Anthony Blinken said Benjamin Netanyahu had made it clear that Israel intends to resume its military operations, something that could happen within days.

But when it happens, Blinken said it could not be a repeat of the first, brutal weeks of Israel’s assault on Gaza.

First of all, he said, Israel had to put into place “humanitarian civilian protection plans” before going back to war, including “clearly and precisely designating” areas in central and southern Gaza where civilians can be “safe and out of the line of fire".

In other words, it simply won’t be enough for Israel to tell civilians to head for the tiny coastal area of al-Mawasi, as it has been insisting for weeks.

Then, Israel must avoid "further significant displacement of civilians". Washington doesn’t want to see tens of thousands of desperate civilians on the move. There must be no "enduring internal displacement".

Critical infrastructure – hospitals, power stations and water facilities – must not be damaged.

Taken together, these rules – and that’s what they felt like – amount to a real challenge to the Israeli government and military, which is intent on destroying Hamas once and for all and which knows that it remains embedded inside some of Gaza’s most populated areas, in particular the southern city of Khan Yunis.

Blinken drove home that challenge: Israel, he said, had "one of the most sophisticated militaries in the world". It was capable of neutralising Hamas while minimising harm to innocent civilians.

"And it has an obligation to do so," he said.

Israel, he said, had agreed with Washington’s approach. He spoke of “concrete steps”, but said it was not appropriate for him to discuss them.
