The shooting follows the recent killing of a black man, Alton Sterling, by police in the city.
That, and a police shooting in Minnesota, led to protests across the US.
The killings triggered a revenge attack by a black army veteran who shot dead five officers in the city of Dallas.
Officials in the city say as well as the three police officers shot dead, three more have been injured.
One suspect is dead and two others may still be at large.

The city's mayor has told a local TV station, external that three officers were shot dead.
Kip Holden said several officers had been injured and were being treated in hospital.
