Fans have been sharing memories of meeting their idol with the BBC's Rozina Sini.
John, from London, was working in a bookshop when he met the actress.
"She has inspired me by teaching me that just because you're a little broken or a little different you can still be an inspiration and shine like she did. She was honest about her health issues and was just herself," he recalls.
"She taught me to not feel embarrassed or a lesser person just because you sometimes struggle to get through the day. Her death has hit me hard but it also makes me feel so proud to have been like her, different."

The veteran film director, Steven Spielberg, knew Carrie Fisher socially, mostly thanks to their mutual friendship with George Lucas.
In a statement from his publicist, Spielberg says:

Hollywood journalist Jeanie Wolf remembers her friend and considers what would have been her greatest source of pride:

In his first comments following Carrie Fisher's death, her Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford described her as a "one-of-a-kind" who lived her life "bravely".
"My thoughts are with her daughter Billie, her mother Debbie, her brother Todd and her many friends. We will all miss her."
In her recent autobiography The Princess Diarist, Fisher revealed that she and Ford had an affair on the set of Star Wars.

Fisher's mother, the Hollywood star Debbie Reynolds, has paid tribute to her daughter and thanked fans in a post on her Facebook page, external.
She wrote: "Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter. I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop. Love Carrie's Mother."

Fisher turned the tables - gently - on an interviewer earlier this year when asked about her recent weight loss for Star Wars.
She revealed in May that she had been asked to lose 35lbs (16kg) for the role.
