    He told the Houston Chronicle, external that the bullet "missed everything vital".

    "I was just scared for my life and my adrenaline was so high I had no idea I was shot," he said.

    "I was sitting doing my work and he walked in, tossed something on the desks behind me," he told the paper "and then three loud pops and I jumped under my table and flipped it in front of me and I guess he ran out in the hall and I took off out the back door and when I was running I realised I was shot in the back of my head."

    The Washington Post has just reported that more Americans have been killed at schools this year than have been killed while serving in the military.

    The newspaper compiled Department of Defense statistics and their own record of murders in US schools to find that nearly twice as many people were killed in schools than in the military.

    "The figures for 2018 do not suggest schools are more dangerous than combat zones," the paper says.

    "After all, there are more than 50 million students, external in public elementary and high schools and only about 1.3 million members of the armed forces.

    "So far in 2018, a member of the military has been about 17 times as likely to be killed as someone is to die in a school shooting."

    The Texas governor then said that gun control was not a proper response to these attacks.

    Today he says he will form a round table commission to study the issue, because as he said in the past hour, "we need to do more than pray for the victims".

    The suspect's Facebook page displayed a T-shirt saying "born to kill", the governor notes, but adds that this was the only thing that could have been considered a warning sign.

    Steven McCraw, from the Texas state troopers, said officers had followed protocol in responding to reports of an active shooter.

    "When you get these calls, every police officer, no matter where you are, has to immediately engage the active shooter. Period.

    "There's no alternative. Because every second means someone else is going to die. In this situation we had that."

    Lieutenant Governor of Texas Dan Patrick says the police chief of Santa Fe was on his way to the school when the shots broke out.

    The police chief managed to pull the injured officer, who has been identified by local media as John Barnes, to safety after he was critically wounded.

    He, as well as a Texas state trooper, fired on the suspect as they were rescuing the wounded officer, officials say.

    The Texas governor says warrants have been issued for two residences, but that authorities are taking their time to search the homes due to the danger of explosives.

    Several explosive devices have already been detected, one of which was a "Molotov cocktail", the governor says.

    A shotgun and a .38 revolver were both used during the attack, officials say.

    Neither were "legally possessed" by the 17-year-old shooter.

    Governor Abbott says the weapons were owned by the boy's father, who may not have been aware that they had been taken.

    Several explosive devices have already been found in and around the school, police say.

    Texas Governor Greg Abbott has just begun a news conference.

    He has confirmed that 10 people have died, and another 10 have been injured.

    This is "just the beginning of what will be a very robust response by both state and federal officials", he said.

    He also called it the "most heinous attack" in Texas school history.

    The school police officer in critical condition and undergoing surgery has been named as John Barnes, who retired from the Houston police force before joining Sante Fe High School.

    According to local media, he remains in critical condition.
