US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said the summit was cancelled because a "successful outcome" did not seem possible.

"Over the past many days, we have received no response to our inquiries from them [North Korea]," he told US lawmakers.

Mr Pompeo said the US was ready for the meeting, adding that he "regrets" remarks North Korean officials have made over the few days.

Earlier on Thursday, North Korean official Choe Son-hui dismissed remarks by US Vice-President Mike Pence - who had said North Korea "may end like Libya" - as "stupid".

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who renounced nuclear weapons in 2003, was killed by rebels in 2011.
