She is one of the two victims named so far.

"There are no words sufficient to express the depth of our grief for Jacki’s death and sympathy for her family and loved ones," wrote the North Shore Congregation Israel on their website.

Jacki was a lifelong congregant of the synagogue and had been a "cherished" member of its staff for decades.

"Jacki’s work, kindness and warmth touched us all, from her early days teaching at the Gates of Learning Preschool to guiding innumerable among us through life’s moments of joy and sorrow," the synagogue wrote.

Robert Crimo, 21, was identified as a "person of interest" within hours of the shooting in the affluent Illinois city of Highland Park.

A gunman used a high-powered rifle and fired from a rooftop into the holiday crowd as they gathered to watch the annual Fourth of July parade on Monday morning, around 10am local time.

It was described by a police spokesman as "very random, very intentional".

With the area in lockdown, Crimo became the target of a massive manhunt. Police warned that he was armed and "very dangerous"

During the early evening, a police officer pulled over Crimo, who was driving about five miles north of the shooting scene, several hours after police released his photo and an image of his car.

After a brief car chase, the suspect was arrested and taken into custody "without incident", Highland Park police chief Lou Jogmen told reporters.

  5. What do we know about the injured?published at 13:12 British Summer Time 5 July 2022

At least 24 people were injured in the shooting during the Independence Day parade in Highland Park.

Dr Brigham Temple, of Highland Park Hospital, where most of the victims went, said it had taken 25 people with gunshot wounds.

He said the injured were aged between eight and 85, with "four or five children" among them.

Dr Temple said 19 of them were treated and discharged, others were transferred - and two remained at the hospital "in a stable condition".

Other injured people were taken to other hospitals, with people sustaining injuries in the rush to leave, as well as gunshot wounds, emergency services spokespeople said on Monday.

  6. Who were the victims?published at 13:00 British Summer Time 5 July 2022

Five adults were killed at the scene, as well as a further victim who the local coroner said died in a nearby hospital.

One of those who died has been named as Nicolas Toledo, a man in his late 70s, who came from Mexico to visit his family and had been with them for a few weeks.

"My grandfather Nicolas Toledo, father of eight and grandfather to many, left us this morning July 4th, what was supposed to be a fun family day turned into a horrific nightmare for us all," his granddaughter, Xochil Toledo, said on a page set up to raise money to send his body back to his native Mexico.

"Not only was Nicolas a loving man, creative, adventurous and funny. As a family we are broken, and numb," she said.

Another person killed in the shooting was Jacki Sundheim, a teacher at a Highland Park synagogue. The North Shore Congregation Israel confirmed her death in a message to congregants, external.

The synagogue said she was survived by her husband and daughter, Reuters news agency reports.

"Our founders carried muskets - not assault weapons,” the Democratic governor stressed, adding that none of them would have said "you have a constitutional right to an assault weapon with a high-capacity magazine".

    Strollers, purses, lawn chairs.

The remnants of panic remain in the items left discarded on the street as people ran from the scene of a deadly parade shooting.

This is still an active crime scene and the shooter is at large - so it’s sombre but tense.

The police I spoke to were called in this morning from other jurisdictions and have been here for five hours.

One man I spoke to fitted the shooter's description - white, early 20s, long black hair - and had just been questioned by police.

The rest of the suburbs on the north shore (of Lake Michigan, north of Chicago) have cancelled parades and fireworks and closed beaches.

What is typically the best day of the year in Chicago has quickly turned into one of the most tragic imaginable.
