Antonio Romanucci says he wants to know, where the police unions stand on this.

He says he wants to hear from them and know that they condemn the "vulgarity" of the actions from officers against the 29-year-old.

He adds that all people should also condemn the acts, which led to the Tyre's brutal death.

  2. Officers acted like 'pack of wolves' - lawyerpublished at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Romanucci goes on to discuss the charge of kidnap levelled against the officers involved in the arrest of Tyre.

He asks people to consider the weight of such a charge against police officers, asking: "When has this happened in this country?"

He says Tyre was "terrorised" by the officers who acted together "like a pack of wolves", leading to Tyre's murder.

  3. Postpublished at 17:47 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Romanucci continues his short address focusing on the so-called scorpion unit.

"We are asking Dhief Davis to disband the scorpion unit effective immediately," he says.

"The intent of the scorpion unit is now corrupted. "It cannot be brought back to centre with any morality and dignity.

"How will the community ever trust a scorpion unit?

"The intent was good, the end result was a failure.

"I call on all chiefs across the country to review their saturation units and disband them."

  4. Lawyer calls for Scorpian unit to be disbandedpublished at 17:46 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Antonio Romanucci says the police units involved in carrying out brutality against Tyre Nichols, are "oppression units".

These units - known as scorpion units - are given "whispered impunity" to carry out these crimes, Romanucci adds.

He is calling for the scorpion unit to be dismantled immediately, and for all chiefs in this country to review their saturation units, their squad units.

  5. 'Not all officers were in uniform'published at 17:45 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

We're now hearing from another lawyer on the Nichols family team, Antonio Romanucci, who says "we have to lead from the top".

In addressing the criminal charges against the five officers, he says they were in an unmarked squad car and not all officers were in uniform.

You can call this the Scorpion unit, he says, "but what they are is a suppression unit".

  6. 'Justice for Tyre Nichols' chants lawyerpublished at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Crump is still going as he claims the culture of police is central to the problem - something he says has to be called out.

He remarks "call out the culture" - a chant which is repeated back to him.

This has to be the conversation

"Otherwise there will be more hashtags than we can keep up," he adds.

"Justice for Tyre Nichols," is another chant he leads in the church while holding Tyre's mother's hand.

  7. 'US police culture needs to change'published at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Crump says the culture of the US police force needs to change and people can't cover up crimes against our loved ones.

"We have to talk about this until it stops," Crump adds.

"Call out the culture," he says, and those around him repeat it like a mantra.

He says it is the institutionalised police culture that is on trial today.

A main focal point of the case is that all of the arrested officers are black, as was Tyre Nichols.

  8. Crump details night of Nichols's arrestpublished at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Crump then details the night of Tyre's arrest when police turns up at his mother's house.

They came to her house said Tyre had been arrested for DUI and he had to be pepper sprayed, tasered and taken to hospital, he says.

She was told not to go to the hospital. She then received a phone call from a doctor at 04:00 asking why she wasn't in hospital and then told her Tyre had suffered a cardiac arrest and his kidneys were failing, he adds..

Crump claims the death of Tyre was "a pattern and practice"

"That pattern went unchecked and we are so thankful to Chief CJ Davis - her leadership should be applauded through this ordeal."

  10. 'Foreseeable that something tragic would happen'published at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Ben Crump says an older gentleman, a 66-year-old was confronted about the same unit and he was brutalised.

"It was foreseeable that something tragic like this would have happened," due to a culture of "impunity".

"Not just immunity, but impunity," on the black community's constitutional rights Crump adds.

  11. Postpublished at 17:37 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Crump goes on to talk about another man who was picked up by the Scorpion unit a few days before.

He says that after this "ordeal", the man called police internal affairs twice but they never responded.

"If they had responded we might not be here today," Crump says, adding that he wants to make sure other citizens in Memphis are protected from police brutality.

  12. People have come forward about Scorpion unit brutality - lawyerpublished at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Crump is now speaking about the so-called Scorpion unit in the Memphis Police Department.

Scorpion - which stands for "Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods" - is a 50-person unit with the mission of bringing down crime levels in particular areas.

The police chief has ordered an internal investigation into the unit.

But, Crump says this unit "has engaged in this type of brutality before."

He adds: "This unit has engaged in excessive use of force against black citizens before.

"We intend to make sure that is pointed out in the civil case.

"Citizens have reached out to us and the family about their experiences."

  13. 'We want justice for justice'published at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

"We want justice for justice," Ben Crump has said multiple times.

He says police officers have the duty to intervene when they see a crime being committed.

  14. 'Tyre's Law'published at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Crump goes on to highlight the reform Tyre's family want to see to prevent some black people being unjustly killed by police.

His mother wants a new law, called Tyre's Law, to be created in Tennessee that will emphasise the importance of police officers having a duty to intervene when they see crimes being committed, even if those crimes are being carried out by other police officers, Crump says.

This duty to intervene would become Tyre's Law and would be an appropriate legacy for Tyre, he says.

He adds that RowVaughn Wells is praying for justice for all.

  15. Tyre sent by God - Crumppublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Moving on from the blueprint created in Memphis, Crump turns to Tyre's mother - RowVaughn.

Crump says she believes God used Tyre as an "assignment" to reform and to try and "prevent some of these hashtags of black and brown people being unjustly killed by police".

  16. 'All our children deserve swift action'published at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Ben Crump lists the many black lives taken away from families due to police brutality, and how action to bring those guilty to justice took much longer than in this case.

"All our children," deserved swift action, Crump says.

He tells a large congregation that "we know have the blueprint," and "we [the Black community] won't accept less".

  17. 'We have never seen swift justice like this'published at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

This is not the first time we've police officers committing crime and engaging in excessive, brutal force against unarmed black people in America, Crump continues.

He says it is important people move swiftly when it is white officers as well.

  19. 'This should be the blueprint going forward'published at 17:28 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023

Attorney Ben Crump says he stands on the principle of equal justice, and when he sees how these five officers were caught on camera committing a crime and how swiftly charges were brought - that should be the blueprint for all officers going forwards.

He says he wants the form in which these five black officers were treated by officials and swiftly taken away from their roles, then the same should apply to white officers.

He says this should be the blueprint going forward for officers to be held accountable for.

  20. Charges against officers very important - Crumppublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2023
