Donald Trump is now the first former US president to have a mugshot.

Trump surrendered at Fulton County jail where he had his mugshot taken, his height and weight were listed on a booking sheet (6ft 3in, 1.9m and 215 pounds, 97.5kg), and he was released on a $200,000 (£157,000) bail bond.

His mugshot will go down in history.

It's already featured on Trump's own fundraising website, and it popped up on his X/Twitter feed - his first tweet since the former president was banned from the platform in 2021.

Soon enough, I'm sure you will be seeing the mugshot on coffee mugs, hats, shirts and all sorts of strange merchandise.

Thanks for following along with us in what was a remarkable day.

  2. Trump tweets for the first time since 2021published at 02:43 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

Donald Trump has just tweeted on X, external, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

It's the first time he has tweeted since 8 January, 2021.

He just shared his own mugshot and shared the details of his website - which is used to raise money for his campaign.

Trump was banned by Twitter and started his own social media platform, Truth Social. His ban was lifted by X owner Elon Musk last year, but Trump didn't return until right now.

  3. Trump's fourth criminal case, but his first mugshotpublished at 02:35 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

Let's take a quick moment to recap the events of today.

    • Donald Trump surrendered at Fulton County jail in Georgia, charged with 13 counts connected to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
    • The former president had his mugshot taken and was released on a bail of $200,000 (£157,000). He’ll enter a plea at a later date.
    • Before boarding his plane to return to one of his properties in New Jersey, Trump repeated his claims of innocence. He says the charges are a politically motivated attempt to hamper his presidential campaign.
    • This is the fourth criminal case against Trump – and despite today’s dramatic events, we’re only at the very start of the various legal proceedings against the former president.

Crystal Myers-Barber is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, voting for him in both previous elections. Here's her thoughts on the Donald Trump mugshot.

Wow! I didn’t expect this expression. I had wondered if he would smile and the answer is no! He looks very upset and actually disgusted. It makes me very sad to see this. He’s tough but I can see this appears to hurt him within. I do believe it will help his ratings and backfire though!

Anna Bosking is a progressive Democrat. Here's what she had to say about Trump's booking photo.

No matter the party you affiliate with, it’s truly devastating to see the mugshot of an individual who held the highest office in the United States. Putting party aside, it is an international embarrassment that the man we put on the world stage is an alleged criminal. But at the same time, it is a wave a relief to know that the justice system is doing its job. No person is above the law.

  6. Voter says mugshot is 'unnecessary and vindictive'published at 02:17 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

    Luke Gordon

We’ve just checked in with our BBC Voter Panel to see what they thought of Donald Trump's mugshot.

The voter panel includes a politically diverse range of US voters from across the country.

These contacts, who vary in ages and experiences, provide a window into what the average US voter is thinking about regarding various current events.

Let's start with Luke Gordon, who is a young Republican who would prefer another Republican candidate over Trump.

    Quote Message

Trump is the most photographed person in human history. The mugshot was obviously unnecessary and vindictive. Regardless, the Trump campaign is going to use this image to fundraise—and they will make a fortune. Voters who feel the system does not apply an equal standard of justice to politicians like the former president will be instantly mobilised.

  7. Seven more defendants expected to surrender tomorrowpublished at 02:06 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

Another seven defendants in the Georgia case are expected to surrender by tomorrow, according to the Fulton County Sheriff's office.

The statement added that "additional security" will remain in place at the Fulton County jail.

"Officers will also continue to ensure a safe space for protestors," the statement said. "However, anyone who breaks the law will be arrested and face appropriate consequences".

Mugshots of additional defendants in the case will be released to the media at approximately 16:00 EST (21:00 BST) tomorrow.

This is the official mugshot of Donald Trump released by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office this evening.

Earlier, another mugshot quickly spread on social media - which journalists and observers quickly noticed was a fake.

  9. Former federal prosecutor: trials 'will not happen soon'published at 01:44 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

The Georgia case - and the other three criminal cases Donald Trump faces - will take a long time to head to trial, according to former federal prosecutor and FBI consultant Joseph Moreno.

Speaking to the BBC on Thursday night, Moreno said that "anybody who thinks these trials are going to happen in the next few months is crazy".

In the Georgia case, the possibility of a speedy trial is complicated by the fact that 19 defendants are involved and that there are "state versus federal" legal complexities that will need to be addressed beforehand.

"These cases are not going to happen anytime soon," Moreno said. "I’m sceptical it may even happen before the election".

  10. Trump: 'You should be able to challenge an election'published at 01:27 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

The former president protested his innocence and alleged "election interference".

“You should be able to challenge an election. I believe the election was a rigged election,” he told reporters who were waiting outside his plane.

"I did nothing wrong and everybody knows it."

Trump mentioned two Democrats who lost elections and protested the results - Hillary Clinton who lost to him in 2016, and Stacey Abrams who lost a governor race in Georgia in 2018.

But the former president is not being charged for objecting to the results, but for going further than that - taking illegal action to influence the election process.

Trump went on to call the allegations "election interference" - trying to flip the script on the charges against him.

"We have every right, every single right to challenge an election that we think is dishonest," he said.

Then he walked back up the stairs to his plane, which is currently still on the runway preparing for take-off.

A long caravan of black SUVs, police, and emergency vehicles swept by and delivered the former president to the jail.

This is a more substantial motorcade than Donald Trump has used in the past.

The level of security is similar to what is used for a sitting President, not one who has departed the White House.

Donald Trump has just arrived at Fulton County Jail, where he’ll be fingerprinted and potentially have his mugshot taken.

That highly anticipated photo would be publicly released later.

The former president will be released on bail, which has been set at $200,000 (£157,000).

Trump denies 13 charges against him including racketeering and false statements, but he won’t enter a plea today – that will happen at a later date.

We expect today’s process will be fairly swift, and once it's over, Trump will head back to the airport and return to one of his properties in New Jersey.

Anticipation is rising outside the jail house, where the atmosphere can only be described as anything but normal.

Police and law enforcement officers have blocked off each end of the half mile street.

The public have not been allowed in at all and those of us inside the security zone are locked down.

    No one can enter.

You can leave but then no one can cross back until the former president leaves.

Another half mile up the road, protesters and counter protesters line both sides of the busy road.

Plenty have turned out to support Donald Trump - maybe a few dozen, but they are making their presence known.

Many are convinced that Trump is innocent of all charges but no one has been able to explain why they have reached that conclusion.

We met Lee and Nadine from the self-styled Fani Willis fan club.

Fani Willis is the lead prosecutor who’s pursuing Trump and 18 co-defendants. Nadine said she believes the prosecutor is being targeted because she is a black woman.

Lee said he just wants to be part of history.

Among those we've seen near the Fulton County jail is Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, one of Donald Trump's most vocal allies.

Green - whose district encompasses much of northwest Georgia - repeatedly attacked District Attorney Fani Willis for "politicising" her office to conduct a "witch hunt", according to CBS.

Additionally, Green said she is in "constant communication" with Trump and said she felt "angry" today.

Fani Willis: 'I make decisions based on the facts and the law'

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis led a two-and-a-half year investigation into Trump's post-election conduct in Georgia before filing 41 charges against him and 18 co-defendants.

Willis is the first female district attorney in Fulton County, and is known by fellow Georgia lawyers as a dogged prosecutor capable of securing convictions in high-profile and complex cases.

"She had a reputation of always being prepared," says Melissa Redmon, who worked in the district attorney's office at the same time as Willis.

Willis is known for her use of a racketeering statute in Georgia that was designed to take down organised crime groups such as the mafia.

Willis is no stranger to controversy, either. She's led more than 100 jury trials, including one involving a high-profile Atlanta public school officials cheating scandal.
