  1. Biden to break days of silence on protestspublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 2 May 2024

We're expecting to hear from President Biden shortly on the protests across college campuses in the US.

He'll be delivering remarks from the Roosevelt Room at the White House.

The president has not commented on the student protests for more than a week.

The last time he addressed the matter, he condemned what he called “antisemitic protests” and also suggested some protestors “don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians.”

Stay with us and we'll bring you his comments shortly.

  2. Arrests at Dartmouth College, local police saypublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 2 May 2024

Police also intervened at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where 90 people have been arrested as officers cleared protestors.

In a statement released overnight, the Hanover Police Department says arrests were made for "multiple" offences including trespass and resisting arrest, with both Dartmouth students and "non-Dartmouth students" detained.

The protesters had been warned multiple times that no encampment or tents would be allowed at a planned protest, the force says, adding that those warnings, along with subsequent calls for people to disperse were ignored.

  3. Biden will speak shortlypublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 2 May 2024

UCLA student Taylor Gee says it looked like police were using "explosive fire sticks" to "strike fear" into protesters earlier today.

"It's doesn't seemed like they were hitting anybody, but they're extraordinarily loud and extraordinarily bright and they were using that to basically push all of the supporters for the encampment to a different part of [UCLA's] campus," he says.

He says he noticed the police "arrested quite a few students while they were doing it".

It's just past 07:00 in Los Angeles and if you're just joining us, here's what's been happening:

    • Police have now largely cleared the Gaza protest encampment at UCLA. In the early hours of the morning, dozens of officers entered the protest site and started detaining people
    • Some students have been pictured sitting on the ground next to police buses with their hands zip-tied behind their backs
    • Officers surrounded the site before dawn, removed the makeshift barricades and started dismantling tents
    • A number of loud bangs were heard as clashes erupted between law enforcement officers and protestors
    • Protesters linked arms to try to prevent officers from moving forward, but police pushed through
    • A number of other campuses across the US are also seeing clashes between pro-Palestinian protestors and police, and dozens of students and faculty members arrested

It all happened swiftly towards the end, most of the encampment is now dismantled, and the last few protesters from inside are being detained and led away.

There continues to be a demonstration on one side, with hundreds of police still on site.

There are dozens of demonstrators here who have been detained by police, hands tied behind their backs and all sitting along on the kerbside as they are now being processed and put onto buses.

As they were being led away I asked what their reaction was to the police operation.

“It was expected,” one told me.

Others who said they were students were asked if they thought that being detained might affect their place at the university. “We don’t know,” they replied.

From the police perspective you imagine they will consider this a success as they managed to dismantle the encampment fairly systematically, with protesters significantly outnumbered each time police made a move to corral them back.

  7. Rutgers University postpones exams over 'expected escalation'published at 14:56 British Summer Time 2 May 2024

More news from other campuses coming in now.

Rutgers University said in a post on X that it has postponed exams and other academic activities at its New Brunswick campus.

The university said the exams, originally scheduled to take place before noon today, would be postponed because of an "anticipated escalation of protest activities".

  8. What is happening in other US universities?published at 14:33 British Summer Time 2 May 2024

As police clear the encampment at UCLA, universities across the US have also seen clashes between police and protesters.

    • Yale University - police dispersed around 200 protesters last night, arresting four - two students and two outsiders - according to a university statement
    • Portland State University - the Portland Police Bureau is closing several blocks around the campus as it moves in to clear protesters this morning
    • Stony Brook University - 29 students, faculty members and others have been arrested at Long Island University according to a local newspaper
    • University of Wisconsin - Madison Police were called to disperse protesters on Wednesday, and said they arrested 34 people - four of whom were sent to jail
    • The University of Texas Dallas - police arrested at least 17 people and removed an encampment

Some institutions have reached a compromise with protesting students:

    • University of Vermont - agreed to disclose a list of its investments, according to The Washington Post
    • Northwestern University - agreed to create a new advisory committee in exchange for the peaceful removal of tents
    • Brown University - students agreed to remove their encampment in exchange for a vote on whether to suspend funds from companies financing Israel's military

The sun is just beginning to come up over LA and it appears the protest area at UCLA has been largely emptied.

The barricades around the centre of campus have been mostly dismantled and tents are starting to be removed.

We're still waiting to hear from the LAPD about how long they expect the operation to last and how many arrests there have been.

Our correspondent at the scene says buses have been brought to the campus to transport detained protesters.

There are still some demonstrators around UCLA but it looks like the protest has been largely broken up.

We'll bring you official confirmation of arrests as soon as we get it.

We've just seen live footage of dozens of students fleeing as police entered Dickson Court, where the main protest camp is set up.

Dozens of officers are now inside the area. Many demonstrators appear to have left but some remain, though appear to be surrounded by police.

Officers are now tearing down tents and appear to have the square largely under control.

It's unclear if protesters have set up elsewhere on campus.

  13. Protesters growing agitated as police break throughpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 2 May 2024

    Emma Vardy
    Reporting from UCLA

Police are gradually breaking down the UCLA encampment.

They have pushed forward into the camp around 20 metres on one side, using flash bangs to disrupt as they go.

Now a line of police is facing off against protesters from the encampment, who are all linking arms and attempting to prevent officers from moving forward.

As of 04:30 local time (12:30 BST), the camp is surrounded on all sides by police.

Protesters are clearly getting more agitated as they realise police have managed to break down their barricades, but seem to intend to hold out as long as they can.

The demonstrators were clearly getting ready for this moment during the day.

Protesters with megaphones inside the encampment are shouting instructions to each other, warning people to use goggles and headgear.

  14. Loud bangs and arrests as early morning raid goes onpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 2 May 2024

    Emma Vardy
    Reporting from UCLA

Protesters inside the encampment have started to tear down their own barricades on one side to take elsewhere.

We heard them shouting "police are firing rubber bullets at us". (Law enforcement is yet to confirm this and the BBC can't verify the claims).

There are a lot of loud bangs going off, which appears to be a mixture of police using flash bangs to disrupt protesters, and protesters setting off fireworks.

We have seen protesters being led away by police and officers tearing down lines of barricades around the camp.

In the last few minutes, we've just heard another loud volley of flash bangs as police move further in the encampment.

We can bring you more now on law enforcement officers detaining protesters on the UCLA campus.

Images on our live feeds show detained protesters sitting on the grass with their hands tied behind their backs and surrounded by police.

One was seen being led away by police with his wrists tied behind his back telling the cameras he was an student at UCLA.

"I'm a student, I'm an English major," he says, as he is dragged away by officers. "Don't fail us!" he shouts.

  16. Police have started detaining people, protester tells BBCpublished at 12:10 British Summer Time 2 May 2024
    Breaking

Ben Kersten, from Jewish Voice for Peace at UCLA, has spoken to the BBC from the protest.

He says formations of officers are grouped on a number of sides around the encampment.

Kersten says police have begun detaining people around the edges and at the entrance of the encampment.

He also says police are setting off flash bangs - an explosive designed to disorient people - over the camp.

Law enforcement is yet to confirm whether any arrests have been made.

  17. Police 'using rubber bullets' at UCLA, protesters claimpublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 2 May 2024

Protesters have told us rubber bullets have been fired at them by police.

We've seen several images from the ground of officers carrying what are deemed "less than lethal" weapons - but the BBC can't verify yet if rubber bullets were fired.

The LAPD is yet to release any public comment on its operation at UCLA this morning, including if they have made any arrests.

Police officers are leading some protesters away with their hands zip-tied behind their backs after getting through a line of barriers.

There are still many hundreds of people there and this operation could last for several more hours.

    Breaking

    Cai Pigliucci
    Reporting from UCLA

Police have reached the main protest site and are attempting to dismantle the makeshift barricades.

We’re watching police now breaking down barrier right behind us from the quad side of the encampments.

There are fireworks going off one after the other. The police appear to be through some of the plywood barriers protesters had set up.

They are starting to remove protesters who vowed to stay despite warnings.

Police are asking us to clear a path as we watch someone escorted through in handcuffs.
