'There was one guy we could never catch' - NY pickpocket detective

New York detective Frank Cunningham recounts his days running Manhattan's anti-pickpocket unit in the 1980s, a time when the borough was more dangerous.

In this first person account he recalls what it was like on the streets three decades ago, when New York City was "like the wild wild west".

Mr Cunningham joined a plain-clothes unit which targeted pickpockets operating in the city, and got to know their methods.

Nowadays, thanks to police tactics and a change in culture, pickpocketing has almost vanished in New York City.
