Hoop dance inspires confidence in Native American youth
In the interest of preserving culture and identity among Native Americans, Steve LaRance decided to start teaching a traditional hoop dance to young children.
LaRance, an artist in northern New Mexico, started the Pueblo of Pojoaque Youth Hoop Dancers in 2013, at a time when he felt the younger generation was becoming too distracted by modern influences and technologies.
"We find that they get lost a lot and a simple dance that is part of their cultural heritage has given them self-esteem and confidence," LaRance told the BBC.
