Robert says people hold up Bella and Edward as an 'ideal'

Twilight actor Robert Pattinson says he doesn't understand why young girls like the relationship between the film's characters Edward and Bella because it's so 'committed'.

The actor, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the movie, is surprised by fans' reactions to their romance.

He told Newsbeat: "I'm not entirely sure what the young girls see in it because I didn't know young girls were lusting after a relationship about total commitment.

"I didn't know that was such a sexy thing."

The 23-year-old Londoner thinks Edward's appeal is that he'll never be boring and maybe that's why his romance with Bella is so appealing.

He added: "It's about a guy who will totally and utterly commit to you and yet it will never get too safe - which is, I guess, the bad point of a committed relationship.

"I think people hold up the Edward/Bella relationship as a kind of ideal or something and people are desperate to reach for it.

"I really don't know why, it's obviously just touched people in a very profound way."

'I care a lot'

Twilight fans were out in force for the world premiere of the second instalment of the movie, New Moon, which comes to UK cinemas on 20 November.

Robert says he tries not to read too much of what is being written about the movie during filming, something which co-star Kristen Stewart also feels strongly about.

The 19-year-old, who plays Bella Swan in the film, admits that she takes a lot of notice of what fans say.

"I care a lot," she said. "I actually probably should read less. It matters what they think. While I'm making the films I try to limit it.

"The fact that all these people already have a vested interest, it's almost like we're working with them.

"I know that sounds kind of weird but it's like they care about it just as much as we do so I'm very interested to see what they think."

However, she says she's able to separate what people think of her from what die-hard fans think of the film itself.

Kristen says everybody can relate to her character Bella in the books

"I only take it personally when it's about the movie. If they actually have a genuine problem with the way we did the movie and it makes sense to me and it's actually a good point, it kills me," she said.

"There always will be that because people interpret it differently and we couldn't fit the entire book into the movie.

"The stuff you really have to ignore is when they talk about you, like they don't like your hair."

Kristen admits that she gets a lot of abuse for her role in the hugely successful franchise, but thinks it's because her character Bella appeals to so many people.

She said: "When you read the book, as a girl you are Bella and I'm so different obviously to so many people.

"As distinctly as her character is written, so many girls feel like they are Bella. She is innately what most girls want to be.

"Even though she gets really wrapped up in her own head and questions everything and tortures herself, when it comes down to it she's going to make the decision that her heart tells her to do and I think most girls are like that."
