Coldplay and Jay-Z will headline a concert on New Year's Eve in Las Vegas.

The American rapper and British band will share a stage at the new Cosmopolitan casino and resort.

Officials at the venue also say that the music stars will play solo sets with performances on the hotel's 20-metre (65ft) marquee overlooking the Las Vegas Strip.

The concert is part of a three-day event to celebrate the opening of the $3.9 billion (£2.5bn) resort.

Before the New Year's Eve concert Jay-Z will be touring Australia as the main support act on U2's 360° Tour.

Earlier this month, Coldplay's Chris Martin played a new track called Wedding Bells at the unveiling of Apple's latest iPod and iTunes Ping service.

The band have been recording their fifth studio album this year, the follow-up to 2008's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.
