Billie Joe Armstrong says Green Day have started writing their new album

Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong says he was asked to leave a plane he was travelling on in California for not pulling up his trousers.

The singer, 39, tweeted to say: "Just got kicked off a Southwest flight because my pants sagged too low!"

Southwest Airlines has apologised to Billie Joe Armstrong.

"As soon as we became aware of what happened, we apologized for this customer's experience," said Brad Hawkins, a spokesman for the firm.

"He elected to take the next flight.

"We followed up with this customer and involved employees to get more details and, in our latest conversations, understand from the customer the situation was resolved to his satisfaction."

The plane was flying from Oakland to the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank.

New album

Cindy Qiu, a local TV producer, was on the flight and described what happened on her company's website.

She says she heard Billie Joe Armstrong ask the flight attendant who'd demanded he pull up his trousers, "Don't you have better things to do than worry about that?"

She claims he then tried to take his seat but was asked to leave the plane.

Green Day released their eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown in 2009.

In May, Billie Joe Armstrong revealed that the band had started writing the follow-up.

"I don't want to give away too much but just know that me, Mike, Tre and Jason are collaborating and having the best time playing music," he said.

The Green Day front man completed a short run starring in the Broadway adaptation of the band's 2004 album American Idiot earlier this year.
