Almost 9,000 teenagers have attended Radio 1's Teen Awards at Wembley Arena in London.

This year's winners included Olly Murs, who won best British album, and Ed Sheeran, who won best British song for The A Team.

The Wanted were named best British music act, while Harry Potter star Rupert Grint picked up best British actor.

One Direction, Pixie Lott and Jason Derulo were among those who performed.

Tom Daley was named best British young sports star.

Speaking to Newsbeat he said: "It's an honour to win an award like this because it shows all the hard work that you put in, whether in the pool or the gym, it pays off."

The Inbetweeners won best British TV show. Its four main actors, Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison and James Buckley accepted the award.

Joe, who plays Simon, said: "It's amazing. It means more when it's voted for by the public. It really means a lot."

Sixteen-year-old Charlie Ward was given an award after saving a six-year-old girl from drowning.

Alec Martin, 13, also won for raising thousands of pounds for charity, despite suffering from cancer.

Pippa Haynes, 17, was the third Teen Hero for her work acting as a young carer for her disabled mum and helping out in the community.

"Ed Sheeran gave me my award and I got his signature," she said. "It's surreal because you see famous people on the TV but they turn out to be so normal."

"These awards are special because it gives people recognition for the great things they do."

One Direction got the loudest screams of the afternoon when they performed What Makes You Beautiful.

Liam from the band said the crowd reaction was overwhelming: "We had our ear pieces in but it was so so loud. We just thought 'Woah'."

Pixie Lott was the headline act of the day and wore black cat ears as she sang a number of her hits including All About Tonight and Mama Do.

Cher Lloyd, Joe Jonas, Ed Sheeran and Rizzle Kicks were also on the bill.

The event was hosted by Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw and Mollie King from The Saturdays.
