Lily Allen has spoken for the first time after giving birth to her second daughter.

No official announcement has been made but it has been reported that she had the baby on Tuesday.

The singer tweeted: "Quite overwhelmed by all the well wishing going on. THANK YOU everybody xxx."

Lily Allen has previously suffered two miscarriages, in 2010 with her present partner, and with Chemical Brothers' Ed Simons in 2008.

The star, who lives in Gloucestershire with husband Sam Cooper, had previously said that her dream was to live in the country and have children.

They already have a daughter called Ethel, who was born 14 months ago.

According to messages on Twitter the newborn is called Marnie Rose.

Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou wrote: "I have to confess I had a little cry when @lilyrosecooper told me Marnie Rose was born on my 40th birthday. Welcome to the world beautiful girl."

Lily Allen, who now uses her married name Cooper, announced she was taking a break from her music career in 2009.

After launching a fashion business, she is now said to be working on her third studio album.

Asked if she was managing to have a rest after the birth, she responded on Twitter: "Yeah right. Can't uncross my eyes. Unique mixture of tiredness and strong painkillers."
